Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This study is an empirical investigation into horizontal regional variation in the Modern Standard Arabic of radio news bulletins. After first determining the position of Modern Standard Arabic within the Arabic language setting, which has been described in terms of, among other things, digl…ossia, triglossia and quadriglossia, the consequences which these descriptions have on the methodological level are analyzed. For this study a corpus-linguistic approach was chosen, requiring the compilation of a text corpus of radio news bulletins from linguistically very different countries, Algeria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The completely transcribed corpus of approximately 320,000 words was tagged primarily on the word level, using the traditional, mixed grammar as a reference point. Various computer applications were then developped to explore the corpus. The emphasis in this study was on the synchronic description of the use of complementary particles with reference to contemporary Standard Arabic grammar. In general, the investigation attests to great uniformity among the three countries on the syntactic level, but it also reveals that with particles of a similar function an important shift in function has occurred as compared to the descriptions of these particles in classical Arabic grammar. Hardback. Condition: New. Culture in CrisisThe right of access to, and enjoyment of, cultural heritage is enshrined in human rights norms and the devastating effects of armed conflict on cultural heritage are well documented, with the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage having been an integral part of warfare throughout…history. Culture now, once again, finds itself on war's frontline Marking the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and in the current context of devastating conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, among others, Heritage at War - Plan and Prepare brings together military, academic, and heritage practitioners' voices from across the Euro-Atlantic, North Africa and the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific to explore how lessons learned from past experiences of conflict can inform approaches to the safeguarding of cultural heritage today. Emerging from and building upon an international conference held at the VandA Museum in February 2023, the book addresses how the military, the heritage sector and other stakeholders in Human Security can, and must, collaborate to give primacy to people and protect tangible and intangible cultural heritage under attack. The volume's case studies highlight interdisciplinary efforts to protect heritage in conflict zones, drawing out guidance for those working in the Heritage Sector in these contexts, with specific relevance to those engaged in cultural heritage protection and those working in related interdisciplinary fields. Reviewing the historic relationship between heritage and armed conflict, and offering lessons for present-day practitioners, Heritage at War shows how, in different contexts, heritage can be a catalyst and target of conflict, an obstacle to stabilisation, and yet also a potential vector of peace-building and the return to normality.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Department of Defense (DOD) implemented the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) process in 1994 as an alternative to the more traditional, overly bureaucratic acquisition system in place throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Many senior leaders in the Office of the Secretary of D…efense (OSD) and the services heralded the process as an important component of DOD's acquisition reform revolution. Nevertheless, did the system really provide significant results beyond what the acquisition system could provide Before 1996, the ACTD's purpose was to fill a void in the existing acquisition process by transitioning emerging technologies to the warfighter faster and cheaper than acquisition policy and regulation allowed. Now that the new DOD 5000 directives provide significant regulatory relief governing current acquisition programs, is the ACTD process still viable or has it become irrelevant This paper compares the current DOD 5000 acquisition process with the ACTD process and examines three ACTDs, all Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, to determine if the ACTD process produced results that could not be expected in today's reformed acquisition environment. What the research shows is that for major weapon system development efforts, the ACTD program does not offer substantial benefits. In fact, the ACTD process creates problems the traditional acquisition process was designed to prevent.
