It seems that the destiny of South East Asia, at least as far as art is concerned, is inversely proportional to that of the international economic situation and to the consequent ability to react when faced with catastrophe. In 2004, at the height of a flourishing global economy, Southeast Asia--including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines--suffered one of the deadliest catastrophes in the history of humankind, the Asian Tsunami. It began with an under-ocean earthquake which sparked a series of devastating tsunamis that eventually killed more than 225,000 people in 11 countries. Emerging from this post-tsunami era is a generation of artists who are hitting their collective stride and attracting the interest of international collectors and institutions as artists of this region never have before--as if their energy might prove a source of renewal for the rest of the world. This volume documents an exhibition of 18 such artists--Yee I-Lann, Entang Wiharso, Agus Suwage, Haris Purnomo, Wayan Suja, Gede Mahendra Yasa, Ketut Moniarta, Ristyo Eko (R.E.) Hartanto, Davy Linggar, Ronald Ventura, Yasmin Sison, Geraldine Javier, Nona Garcia, Annie Cabigting, Wire Tuazon, Alfredo Esquillo, Lyra Garcellano and Emmanuel Santos--held at Milan's Primo Marella Gallery.

"According to the theory of entropy we may presuppose that the condition of disorder we have today in modern life is not a negative symptom.". These are the words of Jim Supangkat, an authoritative Indonesian critic and curator, in the introduction to this book which investigates the contemporary art scene in his country through the work of ten key artists. Similar to the artistic production of other Asian scenes - China and India especially - Indonesia celebrates chaos as, precisely, a globalised symptom that is not necessarily lacking in expressive possibilities. In fact Supangkat continues: "When chaos reaches its critical point the process of decadence and the conditions of disorder are concluded and a new substance takes shape, with a level of order that is wholly different from what existed previously.". artists: Gede Mahendra Yasa, Handiwirman Saputra, F.X. Rilegato. Condition: fine. Milano, PRIMO MARELLA GALLERY, 2008.Brescia, MUSEO DI SANTA GIULIA, December 10, 2008 - January 19, 2009.Edited by Battiston E. and Marella P.English Text.Bologna, 2009; bound, pp. 168, 140 col. ill., cm 25x29. Eighteen artists from Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. More than 150 works that document the most recent artistic production of southeast Asia, amid spontaneity, political engagement and desperate vitality. The reality in which this numerous group of artists operate is efficaciously exemplified in a work by Yee I-Lann: two men with astonished expressions arrive at a coast (or are they still on the high seas?) followed by a mythological bird, the bearer - perhaps - of good luck. Primo Marella writes in the introduction: "It seems that the destiny of South East Asia, at least as far as art is concerned, is inversely proportional to that of the international economic situation and to the consequent ability to react in the face of the difficulties it triggers in people. Some years ago, at the height of a flourishing economy that affected the whole world, Asia in particular, this territory, which includes Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines suffered one of the worst catastrophes in the history of humanity. Today an international crisis of as yet unknown proportions is affecting the whole world, overwhelming not only the banks and the most productive areas, but also the Asian art that had chiefly emerged over recent years. Now from this subcontinent a generation of artists with uncommon qualities is making its name, attracting the interest and involvement of markets, institutions and enthusiasts as never before on this territory". Libro.
