Husserl beschreibt Phantasie als »da…s als Vergegenwärtigung charakterisierte Bewusstsein« und betont das Wesen des Nichtgegenwärtigkeits-Bewusstseins. Während wir in einer Gegenwart leben und ein Wahrnehmungsfeld haben, existieren auch Erscheinungen, die außerhalb dieses Feldes liegen. Technisch betrachtet, analysiert Husserl Grundformen des Bewusstseins, spezifische Intentionen und Modifikationen der Aktcharaktere sowie der gegenständlichen Korrelate von Bewusstseinserlebnissen. Die Texte thematisieren die phänomenologische Bestimmung der verschiedenen Weisen des Bewusstseins, insbesondere die intentionale Beziehung auf Gegenständliches, wie in der fünften der Logischen Untersuchungen (1901) dargelegt. Im Detail wird innerhalb der Erlebnisklasse der Vorstellungen, im Gegensatz zu Urteilen und Gefühlen, die Charakteristik der Intention anschaulicher Vorstellungen im Vergleich zu begrifflichen Vorstellungen untersucht.
