Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Published in 1974, Marshall Hodgsons The Venture of Islam was a watershed moment in the study of Islam. By locating the history of Islamic societies in a global perspective, Hodgson challenged the orientalist paradigms that had stunted the development of Islamic studies and provided an alter…native approach to world history. Edited by Edmund Burke III and Robert Mankin, Islam and World History explores the complexity of Hodgsons thought, the daring of his ideas, and the global context of his world historical insights into, among other themes, Islam and world history, gender in Islam, and the problem of Muslim universality. In our post-9/11 world, Hodgsons historical vision and moral engagement have never been more relevant. A towering achievement, Islam and World History will prove to be the definitive statement on Hodgsons relevance in the twenty-first century and will introduce his influential work to a new generation of readers. Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Good. This publication accompanies a major exhibition organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, and the National Gallery of Australia. It features some fifty American and fifty Australian landscape paintings produced during the period when landscape became the focus for arti…sts in both countries. In both traditions landscapes trace the ever-changing complexities of bringing what is known to the experience of the unknown, exploring the profound relationship that we have with the land on which we live. Many of America's finest landscape painters are represented, including Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, and William Merritt Chase. Australian artists include Joseph Lyatt, Augustus Earle, John Glover, Eugene von Guerard, Louis Buvelot, and Arthur Streeton, among others. Book has minor shelf wear.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 336 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Since 1985, scientists have been documenting a hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico each year. The hypoxic zone, an area of low dissolved oxygen that cannot s- port marine life, generally manifests itself in the spring. Since marine spe…cies either die or ee the hypoxic zone, the spread of hypoxia reduces the available habitat for marine species, which are important for the ecosystem as well as commercial and recreational shing in the Gulf. Since 2001, the hypoxic zone has averaged 2 1 16,500 km during its peak summer months , an area slightly larger than the state 2 2 of Connecticut, and ranged from a low of 8,500 km to a high of 22,000 km . To address the hypoxia problem, the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force (or Task Force) was formed to bring together represen- tives from federal agencies, states, and tribes to consider options for responding to hypoxia. The Task Force asked the White House Of ce of Science and Technology Policy to conduct a scienti c assessment of the causes and consequences of Gulf hypoxia through its Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR).

Paperback. Condition: New. Before he had even conceived of the Decline and fall of the Roman Empire there was another Edward Gibbon, a young expatriate living in Switzerland and writing in French. In the Essai, a work of remarkable erudition and energy completed by the age of twenty-one, Gibbon reflects on the present state of k…nowledge in post-Renaissance Europe - what he calls littérature. The first publication of the Essai since 1761, this critical edition sets Gibbon's work in its intellectual context. A detailed introduction examines the biographical, cultural and historical background to this text: the young writer's perception of European intellectual life as he observed it from Lausanne, his relation to the Encyclopédie and the French académies, the fate of erudition, and the modern organization of learning in books. An extensive commentary completes this edition, providing invaluable annotation of each chapter, including the important but little-known sections on religion that were replaced by Gibbon in the final text.As current debates revisit the meaning of Enlightenment, readers will find in this edition of Gibbon's Essai a new approach to the intellectual networks and tensions that lie at its heart.
