Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book centers on the remarkable General Suwarow, an eccentric genius who led a formidable Russian army to battle in Italy at the close of the 18th century. The book begins by exploring the turbulence of the times as revolutionary forces clashed with European powers, leading to Suwarow's pivotal role in the Second Coalition. As described by the author, Suwarow was a man of great courage and devotion to his country, but also a devout believer in divine intervention and the importance of self-sacrifice. His unwavering faith, combined with his military brilliance and ability to inspire his troops with a shared sense of duty and purpose, made him a formidable opponent. In this book, the reader will discover how Suwarow's strategies, including an emphasis on rapid movement and relentless attacks, defied conventional tactics and earned him both success and infamy. The author provides a thorough examination of his military campaigns, including detailed accounts of his victories at battles such as the Adda and Trebbia, offering insights into the strategic decisions that shaped the course of the war. The book not only chronicles Suwarow's military exploits but also explores the profound impact of his character on the soldiers under his command and the enemies he faced. The author captures the essence of this complex and enigmatic figure, whose legacy continues to inspire and intrigue military historians and enthusiasts alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The last campaign of an outstanding Russian Field-MarshalIn the final year of the 18th century the aspirations and fortunes of revolutionary France were in the ascendant. The brilliance of Napoleon Bonaparte as a military commander was making an enduring impression on European battlefields and influencing the manner in which warfare would be waged. Meanwhile, in Russia, the 69 year old Field-Marshal Suwarow was banished from court, living in quiet retirement, little suspecting that an urgent command from his nation's government was about to take him back to the forefront of the armies of Russia for one final campaign. It may have been imagined that Suwarow would fare little better than the commanders of other armies who stood in opposition to the armies of revolutionary France. However, that proved not to be the case. Suwarow presided over a brilliant campaign which, perhaps because of its singularity amid a tidal wave of French successes, has often been overlooked by students of the age. In addition to the description of that campaign, this Leonaur edition includes a biographical sketch of Suwarow and several images which were not in the original edition of the text.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Condition: Wie neu. Two Volumes. Octavo. Frontispiece, 694 pages [continuous pagination through both volumes]. Hardcover / Original publisher's cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. With several, very interesting remarks regarding the formig of Jewish Battalions, "composed mainly of Jews whose linguistic qualifications were confined to Hebrew, Russian or Yiddish, large numbers of whom it was suggested would be found in the East of London. Jewish officers and non-commissioned officers already serving in the Army were allowed to volunteer for these battalions, which were trained and organized at Plymouth by Lieut.-Colonel J.H.Patterson, D.S.O., who had rendered good service at Gallipoli in command of the Zion Mule Corps. The raising of these units was not without its humorous sides. The East End Jew was by no means over anxious to risk his skin for the land of his adoption, and a good many made themselves scarce as soon as they were called up. The police were given the name of the absentee - for example, Isaac Cohen - but when they searched the locality they found perhaps a hundred Isaac Cohens." General Sir Cecil Frederick Nevil Macready, 1st Baronet, GCMG, KCB, PC (Ire) (7 May 1862 9 January 1946), known affectionately as Make-Ready (close to the correct pronunciation of his name), was a British Army officer. He served in senior staff appointments in the First World War and was the last British military commander in Ireland, and also served for two years as Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis in London.
