First edition thus. xxvii, 196pp. The Ancren Riwle (also known as the Ancrene Wisse or Guide for Anchoresses) is an anonymous monastic rule (or manual) for anchoresses written in the early 13th century. The work consists of eigh…t parts: divine service, keeping the heart, moral lessons and examples, temptation, confession, penance, love, and domestic matters. Parts 1 and 8 deal with what is called the "Outer Rule" (relating to the anchoresses' exterior life), while Parts 2-7 deal with the "Inner Rule" (relating to the anchoresses' interior life). It is written in Middle English, and was translated into Anglo-Norman and Latin. The present edition has been rendered into Modern English and edited by M.B. Salu, with a Preface by J.R.R. Tolkien and an Introduction and Appendix by Dom Gerard Sitwell. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold shield on the front board. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with light partial browning to the free endpapers. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is in very good condition with some shelf wear and slight fading to the spine. The top and bottom 1/4" of the spine is slightly browned.

Smart unclipped dust jacket with original price of 15s to the front flap, spine a little tanned, with a couple of tiny chips to the bottom edge, so…me faint spots to the fore edges. Green cloth covers with gilt design to the front and bronze lettering to the spine, tidy covers, a very slight lean. Top edge dyed green with strong colour, edge of page block with a few tiny spots, also a very rare tiny spot to a few pages, previous owners name crossed through to the free endpaper, also there are seven pages with a handful of words underlined in red pen, pages otherwise clean and tidy. Good + condition.
