Énée se prête à une lecture politique, car il est le père d?un empire et un chef de guerre; par ses errances et ses erreurs, sa rencontre avec Didon (l?amour), puis avec son père en enfer (le devoir), il apparaît comme un individu en quête d?identité, cherchant un sens à donner à sa vie. Élève attentif de la Sibylle, curieux de l?au-delà qu?il parcourt, il fait aussi figure d?un intellectuel avide de savoir. Du roman médiéval à la bande dessinée en passant par le théâtre, l?opéra et la parodie désacralisante, chaque époque a choisi son Énée, qu?elle y trouve un modèle ou le voue aux gémonies. De Fulgence, commentateur de l?Énéide, à Christa Wolf, sa trajectoire n?a cessé de soulever des interrogations fondamentales.
