Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Danish Archaeological Expedition to Hama in Syria in the 1930s discovered an ancient town lived in for thousands of years. Members of the Expedition also fell in love with the town around the ancient mound, which they explored on their days off. The archive of the Expedition is held by t…he National Museum of Denmark. Rare, gritty photos of bustling city life are interspersed with strictly composed artwork, where the past appears in vivid colour. However, behind the facade of this picturesque town, forces were at play to change the political and social fabric of Syria for ever. The authors of this book are researchers at the National Museum of Denmark. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST U. S. EDITION hardcover, sewn-bound in decorative tan cloth (red stamped lettering and decoration on tan cloth on front cover, and faded same on spine) is in FAIR condition, having corners bumped and worn; tiny circular abrasion at bottom of front cover which has removed…corresponing cloth (see photo); as said before red stamping has faded on spine, and there is some darkening; rubbing/scuffing to covers and spine; at back of book are eight pages of advertisements, principally listings of the other books in "The New Art Library Series," of which this is a volume, but there is some tearing to bottom of pages; also, some soiling to the last endpaper section; looks like a much used artist's copy. Book is SIGNED BY PAUL GROESSE in fountain-ink on first free endpaper. Groesse (1906-1987), born in Hungary, was an art director (and production designer) for films, principally at MGM in his earlier years, and then free-lancing. He won three Academy awards for Best Art Direction ("Pride and Prejudice" (1940), "The Yearling" (1946), and "Little Women" (1949), and was nominated for eight films, including "Madame Curie" (1943), "The Music Man" (1962), and "Twilight of Honor" (1963)). Book is illustrated by the author, and also includes many other artist etchings. This book looks to be one of the most thorough ones on the subject, written and often illustrated by Ernest Stephen Lumsden, an etcher and painter, and Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, and includes technical information on the processes. Art. Etching. Intaglio printmaking. DB[3]. Ernest Stephen Lumsden, et al. (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: New. Pottery from the University of California, Berkeley Excavations in the Area of the Maski Gate (MG22), Nineveh, 1989-1990 presents the pottery from the UC Berkeley excavations in 1989 and 1990. Nineveh is one of the longest occupied cities in the world, with a record of habitation extending back to at l…east the middle of the 7th millennium BC, continuing in an almost uninterrupted sequence through today. It was one of the major urban centres in which the fundamental features of modern civilization first emerged. Its political and religious significance - particularly during its apogee as the capital of the Assyrian Empire in the late 8th and 7th centuries BC - secured its status as a legendary metropolis in history and literature. In 1987, the University of California at Berkeley initiated a program of archaeological investigations at Nineveh. The expedition aimed to elucidate the character and layout of the city's urban neighbourhoods; an aspect of Assyrian urbanism that had received little close attention in prior excavations. Near the Maski Gate (MG22), the UC Berkeley team uncovered a district of large dwellings and wide streets. Multiple layers of occupation and rebuilding suggest the area was occupied during the period when the city was handsomely embellished and enlarged by the Assyrian monarch, king Sennacherib (705/704-681 BC). The work in MG22 provides a stratigraphic history of Late Assyrian ceramics at the centre of the empire through at least the 7th century BC.
