Cameron Associates' Publishers' Note explains that earlier American readers had access only to "odd short stories and essays," and that this selection was issued so American readers could "estimate this most estimable writer," quoting Mao on Lu Hsun as "the generalissimo of the cultural revolution." Cameron describes this as the first volume of a projected selected works (later volumes were never issued). The translator is uncredited in the book.
