En 1699, Louis Thiberge (1660-1730), supérieur des Missions étrangères, adressa trois lettres au Pape pour obtenir un décision définitive sur la position de l'Église catholique à l'égard des rites chinois, finalement ajourné sous l'influence des Jésuites. Son successeur, le père Jean-Charles de Brisacier, reprit l'affaire et fit publier la Lettre du 20 avril 1700, qui résume le débat et conteste les thèses jésuites à partir de leurs propres textes.
