Condition: Very Good. Oxford presentation copy to the former Warden of Keble College, inscribed on the first blank: 'Walter Lock From E. B. Poulton, in memory of much kindness & much fresh stimulus received from him while a colleague in work at Keble, and in years of friendship since then. Oxford. March 1924.' Bound in publisher's blue buckram, slight fading to the spine, light brown spotting to end-papers, fine text, unmarked. Poulton was an evolutionary biologist and lifelong advocate of natural selection who spent 70 years as scholar, lecturer and Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford where he befriended Walter Lock, Fellow and later Warden of Keble College, who was ten years his senior and served as Professor of Exegesis of Holy Scripture. What he made of this book's contents is unknown. Poulton published the volume as part of the centenary celebrations of Darwin's birth and the half-centenary of the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. An excellent association. She begins by explaining the reasons for her silence, and apologising if she has 'seemed neglectful': 'the truth is that I quitted Chester Squr on Monday, for Miss Squire's of Blackheath [.] I return to London to morrow mg, to spend a few days with Mr. Murray's [publisher] family in Albemarle St. & then think of takg the railroad to Derby [opened in 1844] to fulfil a long promised visit.' The letter continues with references to 'Mrs Reese Sr.' of Chester Square, 'dear Kath:' and 'dear Matty'. The letter concludes: 'May we have all reason to praise God's mercy in the complete restoration of our dearest Kitty's beloved husband. I do indeed share yr thankfulness in the happy prospect'.
