His parents were intellectuals - his father a reporter on a major provincial newspaper, his mother a ranking cadre in the local police. This is Liang Heng's own story, of growing up in the turmoil of the Great Cultural Revolution, the most vivid and personal account to have yet emerged from this violent and largely unknown era. Here is Heng as a child, seeing his family torn apart by politics (his mother made the mistake of criticizing a superior; when the party line changed she was labeled a "righist," and divorce seemed the only hope of saving the whole family from ostracism).becoming a Red Guard at 12 and setting off on a quixotic "New Long March" during which he nearly starved and froze.traveling to Peking to see Mao ("I would have laid down my life for the chance") .scrounging for a living on the streets of Changsha with the "black society" of teenage dropouts ("although they were miserably poor, they were truly free").getting caught in the middle of a Red Guard factional battle that involved machine guns and artillery.searching for his super-revolutionary friend Peng Ming, who mysteriously vanished during Cultural Revolution power struggles.working as a peasant on a commune, and struggling to get an education in spite of everything.
