Pittakos (Pittacus), (* 651/650 v. Chr.; um 570 v. Chr.; griechischer Regent) wurde in Mytilene auf Lesbos im Kampf zwischen Aristokratie und Volk einerseits und verschiedenen Adelsfraktionen andererseits zum Tyrannen berufen; auf Grund seiner neuen Gesetzgebung mußten viele Adlige, darunter wahrscheinlich auch die Dichterin Sappho sowie Alkaios die Insel Lesbos verlassen. Er gehörte zu den wenigen Herrschern der Weltgeschichte, die ihr Amt freiwillig niederlegten, noch dazu mit einer gerade mutigen Erkenntnis: "Es sei auf Dauer zu schwierig, tugendhaft zu sein". Man zählt ihn zu den sieben Weisen (Aisymneten); der Nachwelt wurde er durch Erwähnungen in Diogenes Laertios Werk über die Philosophen bekannt.
