These essays first appeared in newspaper and magazine publications, in which James commented on Ruskin, Turner, Whistler, Sargent and the Impressionists, among many others. The Sacred fount is the only one of James' novels written in the first person. It was first published in 1901, and follows a weekend party in the countryside, during which the narrator attempts to unravel the romantic secrets of those around him.
