Condition: Sehr gut. Published by J and R. Tonson, London, 1736
Leather. Condition: Good. G. Kneller (illustrator). A scarce three volume collection of the prose and poetry of George Granville, 1st Baron Lansdowne. ESTC Citation No. T92916. With a frontispiece to volume one. Duodecimo. With the unpaginated 'Verses Written in a Leaf of the Author's Poems presented to the Queen' to the rear of volume three. This is the first issue of the three volume 1736 edition with "printed for J. and R. Tonson, at Shakespear"s Head in the Strand, and L. Gilliver, J. Clarke, at Homer"s Head in Fleetstreet" to the title page. A reissue of this set was printed for Tonson and others in the same year with a collective title page. First published in two volumes in 1732. In his preface, Lansdowne explains that he was 'prevailed upon to give way to this present publication' because of the mistakes present in the numerous pirate editions of his work in circulation. Alongside his political career, Lord Lansdowne was a reputed poet and playwright, stylistically similar to Dryden. He was an early supporter of Alexander Pope, serving as his first patron. A scarce set of this early collection of Granville's works. In contemporary calf. Externally sound with rubbing to the extremities, joints and boards resulting in slight loss to the leather. Contemporary ink inscriptions to front free endpapers of all volumes. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning. Frontispiece is closely cropped, not affecting the image. Good. book.
