Paperback. Condition: New. Starting in 2005, Gunter H. Lenz began preparing a book-length exploration of the transformation of the field of American Studies in the crucial years between 1970 and 1990. As a commentator on, contributor to, and participant in the intellectual and institutional changes in his field, Lenz was well situated to offer a comprehensive and balanced interpretation of that seminal era. Building on essays he wrote while these changes were ongoing, he shows how the revolution in theory, the emergence of postmodern socioeconomic conditions, the increasing globalization of everyday life, and postcolonial responses to continuing and new forms of colonial domination had transformed American Studies as a discipline focused on the distinctive qualities of the United States to a field encompassing the many different "Americas" in the Western Hemisphere as well as how this complex region influenced and was interpreted by the rest of the world. In tracking the shift of American Studies from its exceptionalist bias to its unmanageable global responsibilities, Lenz shows the crucial roles played by the 1930s' Left in the U.S., the Frankfurt School in Germany and elsewhere between 1930 and 1960, Continental post-structuralism, neo-Marxism, and post-colonialism. Lenz's friends and colleagues, now his editors, present here his final backward glance at a critical period in American Studies and the birth of the Transnational.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xiv + 290 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is fresh, clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Gentle external handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This volume provides a comparative analysis of the theory and practice of multiculturalism in Germany and the United States during the 1990s. It brings together scholars from both nations to explore how each country was grappling with issues of immigration, national identity, and minority rights in a post-Cold War context. The essays contrast the American experience, rooted in a history of immigration and civil rights, with the German situation, shaped by the legacy of the Gastarbeiter (guest worker) program and the challenges of reunification. The work examines how the concept of multiculturalism itself is "in transit," being adapted and contested differently within these distinct national debates on citizenship and belonging. -- Contents: Introduction; I. Theorizing Comparisons -- 1. The Uses of Comparison / Gisela Welz; 2. Race, Color and Creed / Timothy Brennan; 3. The Politics of Difference: Theories and Practice in a Comparative U.S.-German Perspective / Berndt Ostendorf; II. Gender and Race: Two Categories of Multiculturalism -- 4. Hardback. Condition: New. Multiculturalism is one of the most controversial topics in both the United States and Germany. This interdisciplinary collection of essays by German scholars in American Studies and American scholars in German Studies analyze the "other" from this dual perspective and from their respective disciplines such as literary and cultural studies, political science, anthropology, and history. More particularly they examine multiculturalism in terms of national and ethnic identities, as well as gender and race, and look at the disciplines and institutions that produce and legitimize discourses on subjects such as minority literatures, feminism, and the notion of foreignness itself. What becomes clear is the fact that careful attention must be paid to the particular conditions and different ideological concepts that shape this term, i.e., the "national" historical, political, social, and institutional contexts in which it appears, circulates, and accrues meanings.Contributors: G. Welz, T. Brennan, B. Ostendorf, R. Hof, S. Lennox, A. Koenen, F. Hajek, C.Gersdorf, G. H. Lenz, F. Trommler, H. C. Seeba, A. Seyhan, A. Hornung, B. Thomas, G. O. Kvistad, H.-J. Puhle.…
