Most of the glass used in England up to and including the early medieval period was probably made elsewhere and imported, although the glass was sometimes melted and shaped in workshops in England. However in the mid- and late-medieval periods, there is evidence of English glass production, for the first time making glass from the raw materials as well as shaping it into products. Two glass-producing areas are known: the Weald of Surrey and Sussex (Kenyon 1967), and Staffordshire (Pape 1934; Crossley 1967; Welch 1997). The Wealden glass industry was possibly the earlier and was probably the more important due to its proximity to London. The industry is likely to have originated in the 13th century and received a major stimulus in the late 16th century with the arrival of numerous French glassworkers. Some have suggested that the industry had gone into decline during the 16th century but this is disputed. This illustrated history has a fold out pap of the Wealden glass making area tipped in to the rear paste down. Ref AAA 7.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the vast array of texts produced on papyrus by the inhabitants of Roman Egypt during the first four centuries AD. Its twelve chapters, each devoted to a particular category of document, include texts recovered from excavations and from garbage heaps that provide glimpses of the lives and institutions of individuals, communities, and institutions on the local and provincial level. The book's chronological scope corresponds roughly with the period of Roman imperial rule in Egypt, from the establishment of Augustus as sole ruler in 30 BC to the fall of the Western Empire in 476 AD. Most of the documents are written in Greek; Demotic and Coptic, the native Egyptian languages, are less frequent but also included. The author provides an introduction to the nature and uses of papyrology and detailed discussions of the various types of texts, with translated samples and introductions to the important historical and institutional background. The book's insights into the lives and minds of the inhabitants of Roman Egypt are far-reaching and diverse, ranging from revealing the myriad of ways in which people interacted with institutions to providing glimpses of their religious and intellectual worlds. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
