Hardback. First published in 1979, this classic study of the development of rugby from folk game to its modern Union and League forms has become a seminal text in sport history. In a new epilogue the authors provide sociological analysis of the major developments in international ruby that have taken place since 1979, with particular attention to the professionalism that was predicted in the first edition of this text. Sports lovers, rugby fans and students of the history and sociology of sport will find it invaluable.Rugby football is descended from winter 'folk games' which were a deeply rooted tradition in pre-industrial Britain. This was the first book to study the development of Rugby from this folk tradition to the game in its modern forms. The folk forms of football were extremely violent and serious injuries - even death - were a common feature. The game was refined in the public schools who played a crucial role in formulating the rules which required footballers to exercise greater self-control. With the spread of rugby into the wider society, the Rugby Football Union was founded but class tensions led to the split between Rugby Union and Rugby League. The authors examine the changes that led to the professionalisation of Rugby Union as well as the alleged resurgence of violence in the modern game. 1979. First Australian edition. A near fine copy only marked by light age tanning to the edges of the text block. The d/w is good with some edge and panel rubbing and short repaired edge tears. Scans available if required.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Diagram, Tables (illustrator). 1st. The sub-title for this book describes it as being "A Sociological Study of the Development of Ruby Football", so this is not an account of famous test matches, memorable tries or the great names of rugby. However, in the mass of literature about the sport it broke new ground by tracing its developmental history from legendry origins as "folk games' extending back to the early 1300s. But between that date and the mid-1600s the "game" of "football" was often so violent as to result in deaths, leading to it being banned on "more than 30 occasions." By the early 19th century various forms of football were played more widely and with fewer calamities. It was within the public school system that the foundations if the modern games of Union and League were laid, with the application of rules to regulate how the game was played. Subsequently, the game spread extensively and was soon adopted in the "Colonies" particularly, South Africam, New Zealand and Australia. When this survey was published the game had spread to much of Europe, to Asia and to the Americas. At that time, however, there was a growing tendancy for Union to join its League counterpart as a professional game, which soon occured. Ironicallky, there was also a concern about the levels of violence in the both codes. An extremely interesting and scholarly study of the history and sociological aspects of the game, with well researched and presented text supported with a diagram and several tables. First published simultanously in 1979 in the UK by Martin Robertson and (this copy) by Price Milburn in NZ, 321 pages including appendix, notes and references and index. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Art/pictorial DJ is VG with short tear, few chips/creases.
