Paperback. Condition: New. From 1880 to 1920, the first truly national visual culture developed in the United States as a result of the completion of the Pacific Railroad. Women, especially young and beautiful ones, found new lives shaped by their participation in that visual culture. This rapidly evolving age left behind the "cult of domesticity" that reigned in the nineteenth century to give rise to new "types" of women based on a single feature--a type of hair, skin, dress, or prop--including the Gibson Girl, the sob sister, the stunt girl, the hoochy-coochy dancer, and the bearded lady. Exploring both high and low culture, from the circus and film to newspapers and magazines, this work examines depictions of women at the dawn of "mass media," depictions that would remain influential throughout the twentieth century.

Einband berieben, kleine Verschmutzung auf Fußschnitt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Titelblatt, sonst gut und sauber / binding rubbed, small soiling on bottom edge, pencil annotation on title page, otherwise good and clean. - Keenes edition of the Eclogues attributed to Calpumius Siculus has long been out of print, though it remains the basic one in English for any study of the poems. Keene established that seven poems by Calpumius were of Neronian date, while the remaining four ascribed to the collection were, by reason of their differences in language and metrics, of later date (probably Severan) and by Nemesianus. This edition with its apparatus criticus and workmanlike annotation is reissued at a time when interest in Neronian literature and Neronian propaganda is steadily increasing. / CONTENTS. Introduction Name and Personal History of Calpurnius, Date of Calpurnius, Number of Eclogues to be attributed to Calpurnius Manuscripts, Editions, Idyllic Poetry, Acknowledgments, Abbreviations, Arguments, Ad Lector em, Eclogues of Calpurnius Siculus, and Notes, Eclogues of Nemesianus, and Notes, Appendix, Index. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fresh perspective on the struggle between Julius Caesar and Pompey for control of the Roman Republic. The author explores the events leading up to the civil war, including Pompeyâs rise to power, Caesarâs military successes, and the growing tensions between the two men. The book also provides insightful analyses of the strategies and tactics used by both sides during the war. The author argues that Caesarâs victory was due to his military genius and his ability to adapt to changing circumstances, while Pompey made several strategic mistakes that ultimately led to his defeat. The author also examines the broader political and social context of the war, and explores the impact it had on the Roman Republic. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced and thought-provoking account of one of the most pivotal conflicts in Roman history, offering valuable insights into the nature of power, ambition, and the fragility of political institutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
