Nach seiner Veroffentlichung wurde klar, dass sich Herder in dem Text ganz bewusst gegen gangige Theaterprinzipien seiner Zeit richtet. Besonders die scheinbar zeitlosen Regeln der normativen Poetik, an denen sich Gottsched und speziell der franzosische Klassizismus festhielten, werden stark kritisiert und in einen neuen Kontext gebracht. Auf welche Art und Weise Herder diese Argumentation vollzieht und welche wegweisenden neuen Gedanken sich daraus für den Sturm und Drang ergeben haben, soll Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein. Für die Untersuchung des Textes soll seine Entwicklung knapp umrissen werden. Danach folgt ein zusammenhangender Umriss des Fortgangs des Aufsatzes, um seine Argumentationsstruktur und Herders Stil zu charakterisieren. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf dem dritten Hauptkapitel, in dem eine inhaltliche Analyse Aufschluss zu den auftretenden Kerngedanken der Genieasthetik und dem Historismus geben soll. Dazu leiten die Kapitel zur Bedeutung der antiken Dramentheorie im 18. Jahrhundert und Herders Kritik an Shakespeare im Bezug auf die Wirkung seiner Stücke und deren Art und Weise seiner Asthetik diesen Abschnitt ein. Den Abschluss wird eine Schlussfolgerung aus der erarbeiteten Analyse bilden.
