Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Step back in time and embark on a captivating journey through the annals of a small American town. This book delves into the rich history of Mount Morris, Illinois, commemorating the centennial of its establishment. The narrative unfolds with vivid descriptions of the town's founding in 1837 by a group of intrepid pioneers from Maryland. It paints a picture of a bygone era, where vast prairies met dense forests, and the echoes of Native American tribes still resonated in the land. The author meticulously traces the evolution of Mount Morris, from its humble beginnings as a cluster of log cabins to its growth as a thriving community. Central to the book's exploration is the theme of community building and the enduring spirit of the pioneers who shaped Mount Morris. We encounter the challenges they faced ââ â prairie fires, the threat of horse thieves, and the hardships of frontier life ââ â and witness their unwavering determination to forge a better future. The establishment of educational institutions like Rock River Seminary and Mount Morris College underscore the community's commitment to progress and enlightenment. Through its exploration of Mount Morris's past, this book offers valuable insights into the broader history of westward expansion and the development of small towns across America. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the pioneers and the transformative power of community. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. First Edition
Blue Cloth. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. First Edition / First Printing. Minor edge and corner wear, corners are gently bumped and rubbed, lightly scuffed and scratched, some light outer page edge soil, overall a very crisp and clean copy of this rare and out-of-print title! 488 very clean, unmarked and uncreased historical pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs! Blue cloth with gilt lettering and design to the front cover and spine (lettering is faded on the spine). Two copys of page 10, one is loose containing a photograph and biography of another soldier. Each page contains a picture and a biography of each man who served in World War II and was also employed by Kable Brothers Company. "Since Mount Morris was settled in 1837, our country has engaged in five wars: the Mexican War, 1845; the Civil War, 1861; the Spanish-American War, 1898; World War I, 1914; and World War II, 1941. Mount Morris did her full part in achieving victory in these conflicts. This book has been published primarily as a record of those who served in the armed forces of World War II. The pictures and sketches following include not only those who lived in Mount Morris and surrounding territory, but also a number of boys who lived in nearby towns but were employed regularly in the Kable printing plant or other local industries. It is only fair, also, to give credit to the large number of local boys who were not quite up to the physical standards required for combat duty, but who willingly assisted to produce food on the farms or who helped in the necessary industries of the country. An abbreviated list is also given of the men who served in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. These lists are as nearly complete as it is possible to make them If any names are omitted, it is entirely unintentional.----from the Preface by H. G. Kable Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
