A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete, a big, and sturdy. 20 pp., heavily foxed, but signed by the author, Josiah Boydell (18 January 1752 ? 27 March 1817), a British publisher and painter, at title page uppe…r tip. Thread-sewn, housed in a plastic sleeve. Blotchy stain with tide-lining to first page, dissipating to the second and third page. Boydell's main achievement was the establishment of the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery with his uncle, John Boydell. These two letters to his lawyer and friend argue for the promotion of the arts and crafts movement in England. Boydell was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, of Samuel Boydell (1727?1783), and his wife Ann, née Turner (1725?1764). In 1766, at the age of 14, he moved to London to apprentice under his uncle for seven years. He learned painting from Benjamin West and mezzotint engraving from Richard Earlom, says his Wikipedia entry, then learned engraving, and trained as a painter by drawing the entirety "of the picture collection of Sir Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, prior to the export of the pictures to Catherine the Great of Russia . . . [Later he] met and (on 6 December 1774) married Jane North, the daughter of Sir Roger North." 20 pp. Josiah and Jane had several children. One son, John North Boydell, was later involved in the family's publishing company.[1]Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Hand coloured soft ground etching and aquatint with very large margins. Green bevel cut mount. Mount window 190 x 253 mm; overall size of…mount 340 x 405 mm. John Augustus Atkinson was a British etcher, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He spent 1784 - 1801 in Russia with his uncle, James Walker. After returning to London in 1801, he made prints after his works, of Russian subjects, and made outline etchings for other artists. He also executed paintings on military subjects and battles. 34 x 40.5 overall cm. Note the shading in the right margin. This is rippling of the paper from the damp stained outer margin hidden beneath the mount. The paper is also slightly toned.

Bound With: Select Views in the Cities of Bath and Bristol, tp, followed by 12 pls (B&W, dated 1794), lacks all the descriptive text leaves. Bound With: Collection of Views of Gentlemen's Seats, 1792, John and Josiah Boydell, [2] titlepage, 7 leaves of descriptive text, 12 pls (B&W, dated 1792). Gilt tooling to board edges, & turn-ins, library letter Z6 to fpd, crease to ffep leaf, some light foxing and offsetting. With sixty-four engraved plates, most with accompanying descriptive letterpress. Good early impressions of a fine collection of plates, complete as they stand. The three volumes would appear to have been bound up very soon after they were issued and so do not incorporate any plates published subsequently. 'In little estimation except the impressions be good' - Lowndes. The Angus contains 40 plates only of 63, although the remaining plates would appear to have been issued subsequently to 1787. Watts' Bath and Bristol contains 12 plates, of Bath only, dated 1794 although Abbey's copy was a later issue calling for 15 plates with the date 1819. The descriptive letter press is absent. Griffith's Wales also contains 12 plates, (dated 1792) without the 4 plates issued subsequently in 1795. (192*266 mm). (ESTC T145837. N28006). With 2 folding panoramic maps of the course o…f the Thames from its source to the sea by John Cook of Hendon. William Combe (1742-1823) wrote the text. Half brown morocco over brown boards, gilt. On the spine, 6 raised bands, gilt. Author and title gilt to second panel, volume to the fourth and decoration to the rest. Brown floral, striped endpapers. Each volume housed in a brown fabric slipcase. Boards pristine. Light off-setting, foxing, tanning and finger staining throughout. Volume 1 with printed dedication to George III and the Earl of Oxford. Frontispiece Tamesis ("Father Thames") sculpted by J. Parker after the originals by M. Damer. Vol. I, page 171, extra plate from another Boydell work. Vol II, page 246 plate repaired. The project was intended to be part of a larger series of British Rivers, but only the Thames was completed. It follows the River from its source in Gloucestershire to the North Sea, illustrating the scenery and architecture along the way.

Recent green half-cloth morocco; five raised bands gilt with ornamentation and double fillets, gilt lettered title on two and volume number on four, upper edge gilt. , Tooley states the volumes are ?invariably stained with offsets, and even the text is frequently spotted? Regarding the scope of the envisioned work Abbey quoted f…rom an advertisement which appeared on the front wrapper of the Gentleman?s Magazine for Jan 1792: ?Each Volume will contain at least Forty Plates, engraved in Aquatint, by Mr.Stadler &c from accurate drawings made by Mr. Farington of the most beautiful and interesting Parts of the River it records; with about Three Hundred of pages of Letterpress; and a Map, describing the Course of the River. ? ?The Materials for the Whole of the Work are almost entirely completed. The History of the Thames and the Forth, which will be the first offered to the Publick, are in such a State of Preparation, that the Former will be ready for Delivery very early in the Year 1793, and the latter will shortly follow. ? The Histories of the Severn and the Clyde are also in great Forwardness, and will be ready for Publication, as it is hoped, in the Spring of the Year 1794?? Abbey then states ?The Project was, however, abandoned at the completion of the History of the Thames, ?? , Size : Folio (410 x 299mm), Vol. 1 is illustrated with a frontispiece entitled ?Tamesis? sculpted by J.
