Add to basket2¼ pp. on bifolium. 8vo. With stamped bodure and gilt edge. Insistent letter to her niece Stephanie Beauharnais who married the heir of throne Karl of Baden on October, 8th. It seems like for this reason Joséphine feels constrained to remind the young lady of her duties. Joséphine praises her niece's progress in winning "hearts"… at the court, especially of Madame margravine. Furthermore Joséphine requests her to make the prince happy, to take care of her health, not to make a detour in life and give birth to a boy in eight month. - Tiny hole (without text loss) in fol. 2, two small cuts in former stapling. Wrapping pages slightly discoloured (oxidized?).

Mémoires de Madame de Rémusat - 1802-1808 - publiés par son petit-fils Paul de Rémusat Troisième Édition [Three Volumes Complete]
De Rémusat, Paul [E. Balfour, Balbirny | Balbirnie House] Claire Élisabeth Jeanne Gravier de Vergennes de Rémusat (5 January 1780 - 16 December 1821) was a French woman of letters. She married at sixteen, and was attached to the Empress Josephine as dame du palais in 1802. It was not until her grandson, Paul de Rémusat, published these Mémoires (3 volumes Paris, 1879-80), which followed by some correspondence with her son (2 volumes 1881), that justice could be done to her literary talent.

Add to basket8vo. 1 p. With address. Double sheet. Joséphine and General Alexandre de Beauharnais, her first husband, were imprisoned in the Carmes prison. The general was guillotined on July 23, 1794. On July 27, Robespierre was overthrown. On August 6, Joséphine was released; she was left a widow with two children, a son, Eugène, and a dau…ghter, Hortense. Burdened with debt but having escaped death in a time of scarcity, Joséphine was in desperate straits."I counted on you all day, citizen, and did not go out so I could receive you. I also gave my word to someone to whom I am in debt, expecting to be able to settle it tomorrow morning. This should tell you enough about how impatiently I am awaiting your kindness in fulfilling the service you offered me.Regarding my bracelets, I have found a good opportunity to part with them. It appears that I will be able to get in cash what they originally cost fifteen years ago. I do not want to miss this chanceit is a Dutch merchant who is leaving very soon. If you could give my servant, the bearer of this letter, one hundred pistoles, you would greatly oblige me.Believe, citizen, in my gratitudeit is as great as my devotion to you."After the execution of her former husband, Joséphine was also arrested and was due to appear before the Revolutionary Tribunal when, on 9 Thermidor (July 27, 1794), Robespierre and his regime were overthrown. Thanks to the intervention of Thérésia Cabarrus, later known as "Notre-Dame de Thermidor" and the future wife of Jean Lambert Tallien, whom Joséphine had met in prison, she was freed by Tallien. He also managed to restore to her a small portion of her confiscated property.

Add to basketLetter signed "Josephine", addressed to the "Directeur Général des Postes," Malmaison, 12 February 1813. Text in French. One page, 226 x 185mm (mild creases). Seventy-seven words. In a nice example of patronage Josephine uses this letter to the Directeur Général des Postes to recommend a young man called Gaulthier for a job with…in the Post service. She says that if he can agree to this, then it will make two people happy as a job will assist Gaulthier in his marriage to the daughter of a woman in service to Josephine and whose father is "valet de chambre" of the Viceroi. We have been unable to discover if M. Gaulthier was given a job but he had an in with the right person. Josephine, who by this point was no longer married to Napoleon although he had made her the Duchess of Navarre, was the aunt of the wife of the Directeur Général des Postes, Antoine-Marie Chamans, comte de Lavalette so perfectly placed. Sadly, Josephine died of pneumonia the following year so this might have been one of her last acts of high-level string pulling. Provenance: Christie's, 8 March 1978, lot 34.
