Condition: VG-. 1st ed. f/piece with tissue-guard+xxviii+358, faint floral dec. to endpapers; engr. ex-libris plate of Adrian Eeles centre fr. pastedown (tumbling classic columns), small engr. coat of arms of Frank Bridge Hitchcock centre fr. endpaper, slipped in sheet 'information from the College of Arms' has short biog.details of Jekyll (1753-1837) and his wife Anna Maria nee Sloane who died in 1808, with details of his coat of arms on separate slip, the full coloured coat of arms 'Jekyll impaling Sloane' hand-painted on recto front fly, occupying full page, thin paper-split lower fr.gutter, rear gutter split exposing netting but firm, tanning to outer sides of both endpapers. Red cloth covers clean and bright, though sp.a tad faded, circular gilt motif centre fr.,bottom outer corner bumped, others slightly so. Jekyll was a lawyer, M.P. and Attorney General to the Prince of Wales according to College of Arms biog. Byron, Wellington and George IV mentioned in numerous places.

The scarce first edition of this work, in a signed morocco binding by H Wood.Extra-illustrated with thirty-six plates.The correspondence of British Whig member of parliament Joseph Jekyll and his sister in law, Lady Gertrude Sloane Stanely, along with some letters between Jekyll and his father, Capt. Edward Jekyll.With two notable bookplates to the front pastedown and front free endpaper:With the illustrated bookplate of Indian industrialist F.E. Dinshaw, one of Mumbai's most powerful landlords.With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. He founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. In a full morocco signed binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, lovely. Joint heads and tails starting slightly, with boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good. book.
