In self defense he kills a cop and is sentenced to 4 years of prison, where he plots bloody revenge on the corrupt police force and the mayor. Location shooting was critical to the film's gritty look. The AFI catalog notes: "[The film's] end credits include the following information: 'Filmed Entirely on Location in The State of Tennessee.' . shooting was set to begin in mid-Jul 1973 in New Orleans, LA . but filming didn't begin until 14 May 1974, in Nashville, TN, instead of New Orleans. .
