Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the summer of 2000, the University of Virginia Art Museum mounted an unusual site-specific exhibition called "Hindsight/Fore-site: Art for the New Millennium," for which twenty-four artists created artworks inspired by Thomas Jefferson's legacy. Artists included Agnes Denes, Ann Hamilton, Martha Jackson-Jarvis, Michael Mercil, the Monacan Indian Council, Todd Murphy, Dennis Oppenheim, Lincoln Perry, and Lucio Pozzi; among the sites featured were Montpelier, Ash Lawn-Highland, the Monticello Visitors' Center, area parks and schools, and the University of Virginia. Charlottesville, longtime home of Jefferson and site of the university he founded, served as an ideal location for the exhibition.New essays by the art historian and curator John Beardsley and the exhibition's curator, Lyn Bolen Rushton, explore the art-historical significance of the exhibition and the works' connection to Jefferson's life complemented by essays of noted Jefferson scholars, illuminating arenas of particular concern to the artists. The historian Peter S. Onuf writes on slavery and Sally Hemings, University of Virginia's president John T. Casteen III considers education and democracy, and the Monticello senior historian Lucia Stanton examines agrarian theory and practice. The projects in "Hindsight/Fore-site" were conceptually ambitious and visually compelling, yet most were ephemeral, making the eighty illustrations and accompanying essays in Siting Jefferson a particularly valuable documentation of a remarkable and largely unreplicable exhibition. In 2000, the University of Virginia Art Museum mounted an exhibition called ""Hindsight/Fore-site: Art for the New Millennium"", in which 24 artists created works inspired by Thomas Jefferson's legacy. This text contains essays which explore the art-historical significance of the exhibition. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: VG/VG. Gray cloth boards with silver stamped lettering. White and color-illustrated dust jacket with brown and black lettering. 159 pp. Mainly color illustrations. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon, Eugene, January 20-April 29, 2018. Contents: Introduction / Robert and Desirée Yarber, Morris Graves Foundation -- Foreword : the nature of art, the art of nature / Jill Hartz, Executive Director and exhibition co-curator, Danielle Knapp, McCosh Associate Curator and exhibition co-curator -- Finding time in Achepohl's vision of nature / Cory Gundlach -- A conversation with Keith Achepohl -- Works in the exhibition -- Keith Achepohl : curriculum vitae. In 2011, Eugene-based artist Keith Achepohl (American, born 1934) spent three weeks at the Morris Graves Foundation Artist Residency, "The Lake," in Loleta, California. That period of uninterrupted work, followed by a second stay in 2016, profoundly affected both the artist's subject matter and his media. Thus far, Achepohl has created nine distinct yet interrelated explorations of the plants and trees that he observed at Morris Graves's final home, which are presented here for the first time. Although the finished pieces are wholly of nature, they are, according to the artist, neither landscapes nor botanical studies. Rather, he describes them as "more fantasy than reality, an intensely personal language of nature that developed from careful observation to mnemonic response." Achepohl's virtuosity across media is evident in these sensitively rendered, metaphorically rich portraits of The Lake's natural splendor.
