Langes artistic photodocumentation set a new aesthetic standard for social commentary; Adams lit up natures wonders with an unfailing eye and preeminent technical skill. Looking at Adamss and Langes photographs, extant letters, and personal memories, the book provides a window into an important moment in their careers and seeks to understand why a project that once held such promise ended in disillusionment and is now little more than a footnote in their illustrative biographies. Works from an exhibition that proves mining can be as sublime as it is destructive. Landscapes of Extraction explores the art of mining, which completely transformed the American West. These landscapes of enterprise altered the natural environment on a spectacular scale, with open-pit mines, coal tipples, and oil rigs. Yet artists have often found these scenes beautiful, even sublime. The four scholarly essays presented here explore how artists have portrayed the mining industry in the American West from 1917 to the present day, examining more than eighty historical and contemporary works. The multiple landscapes created by large-scale mining inspired these artworks: the mines themselves, the towns that grew up around them, and the miners and their families who lived and worked there. The industry has shaped communities and landscapes throughout the West: Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Over time, as public knowledge of mining practices increased, artists became more attuned to the environmental and health impacts of mining. From the late twentieth century onward, mining art became political, with many artists interested in exposing the vexed legacies of the industry. Landscapes of Extraction reveals how a powerful regional narrative became a fundamental element of national identity, played out on a vast geographical scale.

Hardcover, in dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Fine in fine dust jacket, in mylar cover.
Trade Paperback. Condition: New. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. New! Edited by Phil Bevis and Tori Champion. Chatwin is proud to release the first major survey of the life and work of Utah artist Gaell Lindstrom (1919-2009). Lindstrom was an artist whose search for inspiration took him from portraying the people and places of his native Utah and the American West to Mexico, Guatemala, Italy, Morocco, and China. Deeply grounded in region and faith, Lindstrom's work testifies to his dedication to craft, which was the foundation for his long and influential career as an art professor. The 130 illustrations, including 100 color plates, showcase Lindstrom's mastery of form and texture, and his ability to capture the stillness of the moment in landscapes and urbanscapes. The texts are by Dr. James Swensen of Brigham Young University, and the artist's son, Dr. Braden Lindstrom of Dixie State University. They examine the arc of Lindstrom's work as a painter and photographer, his relationships with other Utah artists, his artistic influences, teaching philosophy, travels and study abroad (particularly in China and with Chinese artists), and family life and background.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. As time passes, personal memories of the Great Depression die with those who lived through the desperate 1930s. In the absence of firsthand knowledge, John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath and the photographs produced for the New Deals Farm Security Administration (FSA) now provide most of the images that come to mind when we think of the 1930s. That novel and those photographs, as this book shows, share a history. Fully exploring this complex connection for the first time, Picturing Migrants offers new insight into Steinbecks novel and the FSAs photographyand into the circumstances that have made them enduring icons of the Depression. Looking at the work of Dorothea Lange, Horace Bristol, Arthur Rothstein, and Russell Lee, it is easy to imagine that these images came straight out of the pages of The Grapes of Wrath. This should be no surprise, James R. Swensen tells us, because Steinbeck explicitly turned to photographs of the period to create his visceral narrative of hope and loss among Okie migrants in search of a better life in California. When the novel became an instant best seller upon its release in April 1939, some dismissed its imagery as pure fantasy. Lee knew better and traveled to Oklahoma for proof. The documentary pictures he produced are nothing short of a photographic illustration of the hard lives and desperate reality that Steinbeck so vividly portrayed. In Picturing Migrants, Swensen sets these lesser-known images alongside the more familiar work of Lange and others, giving us a clearer understanding of the FSAs work to publicize the plight of the migrant in the wake of the novel and John Fords award-winning film adaptation. A new perspective on an era whose hardships and lessons resonate to this day, Picturing Migrants lets us see as never before how a novel and a series of documentary photographs have kept the Great Depression unforgettably real for generation after generation.
