Sir James David Marwick (1826-1908) was a Scottish lawyer and historian, and served as Town Clerk of Glasgow for thirty-one years. He was also a prolific writer, and it was upon his initiative that the Scottish Burgh Record Society was founded. He edited a number of the society's publications, and in the present work he provides a history of the guilds and crafts of Edinburgh. It is divided into the following three parts: Laws and Customs Relating to Burgess-ship, Guilds and Crafts, Prior to the 15th Century; Burgess-ship, Guild Brotherhood and Membership of Crafts in Edinburgh, 1406-1588; and Burgess-ship, Guild Brotherhood and Membership of Crafts in Edinburgh, 1589-1872. There is also a comprehensive index. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold-stamped crest on the front board.
