This copy is in fine condition bound in full tan calf covered boards, there are raised bands to the spine with six compartments with bright gilt titling to the second and gilt decoration to the rest. There is a gilt device of Marlborough College to the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There are blind dentelles to the marbled endpapers and marbled page ends all round. A dust wrapper is not called for. This book is from the library of Cyril Argentine Alington (22 October 1872 - 16 May 1955) He was an English educationalist, scholar, cleric, and author. He was successively the headmaster of Shrewsbury School and Eton College. He also served as chaplain to King George V and as Dean of Durham. Alington wrote more than 50 books, including works on religion, biography, history, poetry, and a series of detective novels. He also wrote several popular hymns, including Good Christian Men, Rejoice and Sing (recently altered to Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing), Ye that know The Lord is gracious and The Lord of Hosts Our King Shall Be which is used as the epigraph to Nevil Shute's novel In the Wet. This book is a sweeping, scholarly history of the Empire from its Roman roots through its medieval zenith to its dissolution in 1806.
