Los textos recogidos en este volumen -"que deben leerse como un testamento", según precisa Alain Besançon en su prólogo- son una muestra más de la capacidad de Ellul para construir un pensamiento a contracorriente del lugar común. En ellos, Jacques Ellul realiza un análisis tan rico como polémico sobre las relaciones que, en el plano religioso, mantienen el islamismo y el judeocristianismo. Partiendo de tres principios que se supone certifican el parentesco entre ambos, muestra que esta relación es teológicamente errónea, pues esos "tres pilares del conformismo" -hijos de Abraham, monoteísmo, religiones del Libro- constituyen, en realidad, acercamientos abusivos que ocultan una diferencia fundamental: "La similitud de las palabras esconde por completo las oposiciones, a la vez del sentido y del ser". "El crítico impiadoso tanto de la razón occidental como de las instituciones eclesiásticas [denuncia en esta obra] el auge de un discurso demagógico sobre el Corán.
