Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. The Oberlin?Wellington Rescue of 1858 was a key event in the history of abolitionism in America. John Price, a Black man who had been enslaved on a farm in Mason County, Kentucky, fled to Oberlin, Ohio, in 1856 where he lived and worked for two years. On September 13, 1858, a group of men seized Price and took him nine miles south to the Wadsworth House hotel in Wellington, Ohio to begin the journey back to enslavement in Kentucky. By noon that day, news had reached Oberlin and inspired abolitionists to march south to secure Price's release. Six hundred citizens from Oberlin and Wellington surrounded the Wadsworth House. When it became clear that negotiations with the captors were not successful, the crowd sprang into action: three men rushed the door guards to begin a diversionary struggle in the hotel. Theology student Richard Winsor led Price out through a window to a buggy and rushed him back to Oberlin. Future Oberlin College President James Fairchild harbored Price in his home until Price's escape to Canada was secured.…

Corners rubbed with a few tape repairs to spine, library bookplate and stamp on front endpapers, a few pages lightly foxed. 1859 Hard Cover. vii, [1], 280 pp. 8vo. Two-column format. Engraved illustration of Cleveland, Ohio jail where the prisoners were confined on title page. An account of escape, recapture, and rescue of a 'fugitive slave,' and subsequent indictment of the rescuers. From Sabin: "An extraordinary case, under the Fugitive Slave Act. Wellington is located thirty-six miles southwest of Cleveland; Oberlin is nine miles north of Wellington. In January, 1856, a negro slave, called John, was missing from a plantation in Mason county, Kentucky. In August, 1856, a friend of the owner recognized John at Oberlin, and with the aid of friends from Kentucky arrested him with the intention of taking him back. They took him to Wellington, where he was rescued by a large body of persons from Oberlin and Wellington---hence the title. Thirty-seven of the rescuers were indicted by the State, and confined for many months in the Cleveland jail, while the trial progressed. They were finally acquitted and great was the rejoicing. The account of the affair is contained in 280 double column, solidly printed pages."---THOMSON'S Bibliography of Ohio.…

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Small 4to. Original blind-ruled grown cloth with gilt spine lettering. viii, 280pp. Good plus overall. While inner hinges and text block are a solid very good, clean and nice, the binding is quite rough and edgeworn, especially along length of spine, which is chipped along the top, and rear board cloth mottled. A tight and decent first edition of this court case transcript introduced by Henry E. Peck and Ralph Plumb -- a famed test of the Fugitive Slave Law involving an escaped slave from Kentucky and the owner's attempt to reclaim him in Ohio. HOWES S 419.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good-. First Edition. Octavo, 280pp. About very good in the publisher's brown cloth, rebacked to style. Some leaves with tray pencil markings, and a few leaves with shallow marginal chips or creases. Original endpapers retained, with contemporary ownership signature of "A. Kellogg" (could this be Ann Stanley Kellogg, mother of John Harvey, founder of the cereal company?) and a nice 20th century bookplate (C. J. Paterson) to the front paste-down. A sound, sturdy copy. Compared to John Brown's Raid, the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue is a much lesser known, but similarly important event in the lead-up to the American Civil War. An escaped slave from Kentucky named John Price was arrested in Oberlin, OH by the US Marshals. Since the Marshals knew that Oberlin was filled with abolitionists, they quickly moved him to the jail in Wellington, OH, one train stop south of Oberlin. But Oberlin abolitionists caught wind of the arrest, and they quickly followed the train to Wellington, where they overwhelmed the Marshals and took Price to safety in Oberlin, where he went back into hiding and continued a successful voyage on the Underground Railroad to Canada. 37 people were arrested for obstructing the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law, but only two were tried, and given light sentences by a judge in Cleveland. The government's increasing reluctance to enforce the Fugitive Slave Law in the face of growing public opposition led to its repeal becoming a pillar of the 1860 Republican platform. The book, which is printed on cheap, acidic paper, is rarely found in nice condition. This is a sturdy and tastefully repaired copy. Thomson 1041; Howes S419. …
