Paperback. Condition: New. The publication of Cronica Walliae in 2002 provided for the first time ever a printed text of a scholarly work found in manuscripts of the sixteenth century. Its author, the antiquary Humphrey Llwyd, born in Denbigh about 1527, graduated at Oxford University and entered the service of the earl of Arundel. He twice served as a Member of Parliament and, as member for Denbigh in 1569, is accredited with facilitating the passage of the bill for translating the Bible and Book of Common Prayer into Welsh. He died in Denbigh in 1568, and his monument stands in the parish church of Llanfachrell.Cronica Walliae is Humphrey Llwyd's most substantial work and is based upon the medieval Welsh chronicle Brut y Tywysogyon, a narrative of the kings and princes of Wales from the death of Cadwaladr Fendigaid to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. It was used by David Powel in his preparation of his Historie of Cambria (1584), and its study today makes possible a better appreciation of the contribution of two scholars who, between them, laid the foundations for modern Welsh historical writing on the medieval period. No manuscript survived in Llwyd's own handwriting, and the present edition is based upon NLW Llanstephan 177, with variant readings from BL Cotton Caligula Avi.…

hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Includes dust jacket. First Edition. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd: Tywysog Cymru by J. Beverley Smith is a landmark scholarly biography of the last native Prince of Wales and the first Welsh ruler to formally bear the title Tywysog Cymru. Drawing on extensive medieval sources, Smith examines Llywelyn's life, his efforts to unite Wales under a single principality, and his complex political and military struggle with the English Crown during the thirteenth century. The book also provides a detailed study of the politics, diplomacy, and society of medieval Wales, placing Llywelyn's achievements and eventual downfall in their wider historical context. Widely regarded as the definitive Welsh-language study of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, it is an essential work for anyone interested in Welsh history and the medieval period. First Edition.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Humphrey Llwyd (1527-68) was a prominent Welsh cartographer, and antiquary, as well as a Member of Parliament. Cronica Walliae is by far his most important and biggest extant work, but though he completed it in 1559, he never published it. This edition presents Llwyd's achievement in its fullest state, using extant manuscripts to reproduce Llwyd's original as faithfully as possible. The book marks the first attempt by anyone to tell the story in English of Welsh history through its kings and princes, from Cadwaladr to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Welsh prince. Even though it wasn't published in Llwyd's lifetime, it was nonetheless influential and served as the basis for much subsequent writing on Welsh history.…

Hardback. Condition: New. This is a new edition of the first full-length English-language study of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (c.1225 - 82), prince of Wales. In this scholarly and lucid book, J. Beverley Smith offers an in-depth assessment not only of Llywelyn, but of the age in which he lived. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd: Prince of Wales is an outstanding work by an author with a perceptive knowledge of the complexities of his subject. This examination of the triumphs and subsequent reverses of a ruler of exceptional vision and vigour is a substantial contribution to our understanding of the nature of Welsh politics and the complexities of Anglo-Welsh relations. The author takes thirteenth-century Wales as a backdrop against which he analyses the relationship between a sense of nationhood and the practical realities of creating a structure to embrace a unified principality of Wales held under the aegis of the English Crown.…
