Dovuto allo studioso rumeno Iorgu Iordan, e poi notevolmente ampliato dal suo traduttore inglese, John Orr, questo volume offre un panorama vasto e dettagliato della linguistica romanza all'epoca classica, quale si articola in scuole, correnti e singoli protagonisti. La rassegna si apre con un excursus sugli studi anteriori al 1900 per documentare il retroterra da cui prendono avvio le ricerche successive; e affronta poi la scuola idealistica di Vossler, lo studio cartografico dei dialetti e la scuola francese, fondata da De Saussure. Scritto agli inizi degli anni '30, il libro, come osserva D'Arco Silvio Avalle, è un documento ideologicamente e scientificamente omogeneo, un classico e non un manuale, come lo era forse all'inizio, del pensiero linguistico. Esso si indirizza soprattutto ai giovani, affinché il loro esercizio strutturalista non si trasformi in puro formalismo, avulso dall'esperienza concreta della parola reale.
