Add to basketThe first synthesis of New Zealand Mollusca was by F. W. Hutton (1873) in a publication entitled Catalogue of the New Zealand Mollusca. Following this work was contributed by papers by varios people, but it was not until 1913 that the magnificent work by H. Suter entitled The Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca was published, followed two years later by the relevant volume of plates. Many years were to follow before A. W. B. Powell produced and published his now famous New Zealand Mollusca (1979). This mammoth work brought together all of the known work on New Zealand Mollusca, by in this book Powell dedicated merely five pages to the family Volutidae. Other publications in which the Volutidae of New Zealand are featured, where by Weaver & duPont (1970) entitled the Living Volutes, and Poppe Goto s (1992) Volutes. Over the pass twenty?five years there has been a huge expansion in the activities of the benthic fisheries industry in New Zealand waters, as well as increased scientific work undertaken by the New Zealand Fisheries Research Development, NIWA. As a result, new fishing grounds have been discovered and these new areas have produced an amazing range of Volutidae, some previously known from only a few specimens and many new to science. Much confusion has occured with the identification of much of this new material, reslulting in misidentification and the overlooking of new discorveries. And so this work after many years of searching and research and many visits to the major museums of New Zealand and some of the nation s major shell collections, sets out for the first time a comprehensive monograph of the Volutidae of New Zealand. 73 pp., 28 maps, 82 figs, 62 col. pls, loose-leaf 4.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Before writing the fifth Harry Potter book, J.K. Rowling created a seven-page handwritten outline of her original vision for the plot, offering an unprecedented glimpse into her writing process. In these early notes, there are noticeable differences in the characters, terminology, and plot, culminating with a different ending, in which Sirius's fate is not brought about by Bellatrix.Three of the essays in this collection focus on the ramifications of specific changes, such as the outline's original much darker tone, the lack of Bellatrix Lestrange, or the different designation for the Order of the Phoenix. Another takes a more holistic view, looking at the changes in the book's characters. Two essays use the outline to highlight the development that must have happened both before and after it was written. The final essay looks at how outline could be interpreted had one never seen the published book.Together the essays explore the manuscript in detail, offering a new perspective on Rowling's creative process and deepening our understanding of the published book. This collection also includes detailed guidance to help fans interpret the outline themselves. Essays by Louise M. Freeman, Alice Arganese, Irvin Khaytman, Asher Scheiner, Beatrice Groves, John Granger and Patricio Tarantino. Edited by A. Ibid.…

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Good. Preserved is a largely complete printed sheet from a small format vernacular pocket calendar of the early seventeenth century, comprising the months from January to June and thus the first half of the calendar year. The print exhibits the characteristic arrangement of Bohemian ephemeris publications of this period, including a daily calendar register with astrological and lunar symbols together with accompanying prognostic texts. Within the monthly grid appear symbols indicating the phases of the moon as well as astronomical signs including those of the zodiac. The sheet also contains prognostic textual elements intended to provide practical guidance for the course of the year and anticipated weather conditions. The typographical layout includes distinctive astronomical markings commonly employed in such calendars to indicate extraordinary celestial phenomena, including eclipse data. The individual monthly sections are introduced by woodcut vignettes depicting month specific scenes, representing seasonal activities or allegorical motifs associated with each period of the year. Such visual programmes in early modern vernacular calendars served to structure the annual cycle and to connect astronomical time reckoning with agricultural and practical frameworks of everyday life. The title page names the author as: M. Kaspara Ladislawa Stehlika z Czenowa and specifies the intended year of use: K letu Pane MDCX The calendar is dedicated to Karl von Lamberg, Archbishop of Prague from 1607 to 1612, whose mention confirms the chronological attribution. Kaspar Ladislav Stehlik z Cenkova was a Master of Arts educated at Charles University and active as a mathematician and astronomer within the scientific milieu of the Rudolfine court. Following the outbreak of plague in Prague in 1599, he relocated together with Tycho Brahe to the castle of Nove Benatky near Mlada Boleslav, where he assisted in the establishment of an astronomical observatory. Johannes Kepler and other scholars associated with the Prague academic environment were likewise active there. In addition to his mathematical and astronomical pursuits, Stehlik was the author of vernacular annual calendars and belongs to the group of early modern prognosticators who disseminated astronomical knowledge in the form of practical ephemerides to a broader readership. The present printed sheet was extracted from a later bookbinding and represents a securely attested case of secondary use as binding waste. The reuse of obsolete ephemeris publications such as calendars and prognostications as binding material is well documented in early seventeenth century bookbinding practice, as such prints rapidly lost their commercial value after the end of their year of use and were repurposed as inexpensive paper stock. Several calendar publications by Kaspar Ladislav Stehlik are documented, including a Kalendar Hospodarsky a Kancelarsky for the year 1607 (printed 1606), now preserved in the Narodni muzeum in Prague, as well as a further calendar for the year 1611 recorded in the Austrian National Library. For the year 1610, however, no complete copy is currently recorded in major library catalogues. The present printed sheet may therefore be regarded, according to the current state of research, as the only known surviving witness of this particular calendar year. Planar survivals of calendar sheets from such contexts are considerably rarer than the more commonly encountered cut binding fragments. Whereas complete examples of early modern pocket calendars survive only in limited institutional holdings, a substantial portion of their original production survives exclusively in fragmentary form reused in later bindings. The present sheet thus documents both a specific year within Prague calendar production and the broader material practice of the secondary utilisation of printed ephemera in early modern bookbinding.…
