Add to basketAll 35 Buccinum names, including 5 names indicated by a single character, described from Newfoundland by Theodor Anton Verkr?zen in the years 1878 to 1884 are discussed. Their original descriptions are translated from German to English. Type material of 24 of them is figured. In addition, shells connected to 14 manuscript names are figured. Part of the type material is preserved in the Naturmuseum Senckenberg, Senckenberg Forschungs_institut (SMF, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) and was already discussed by Kobelt (1883) and Zilch (1969). The whereabouts of the remaining type specimens remained unknown until we discovered them recently in the Natural History Museum (NHMUK, London, United Kingdom), where most of them were acquired in 1911 as part of the Museum Normanianum (Alfred Merle Norman, 1831-1918). In the present paper we figure these type specimens: the ones from SMF for the first time photographed in colour, the ones from NHMUK for the first time ever. We compare these species and forms with each other and with similar species, trying to ascertain their status. Our purpose is to improve the systematic knowledge and nomenclatural stability, hoping to reduce the chaos that hampers the systematics of the genus Buccinum. In particular, the identity and natural history of Buccinum inex_haustum Verkr?zen, 1881 is investigated, a lectotype is selected and the taxon is compared to other species and to interpretations thereof by subsequent authors. We place B.?meridionale Verkr?zen, 1884 in synonymy with B.?inexhaustum instead of with B.?undatum. Furthermore, we confirm B.?gouldii Verrill, 1882 being a junior synonym of B.?inexhaustum. The type material of B.?variabile is found to be heterogeneous, therefore a lectotype is selected to clarify its identity in accordance with the original description, but no nomen novum is produced for this junior homonym. We confirm B.?amaliae Verkr?zen, 1878 and B.?conspicuum Verkr?zen, 1878 being synonyms of B.?undatum Linnaeus, 1758. We confirm B.?elegans Verkr?zen, 1878 being a synonym of B.?terraenovae Beck in M?rch, 1867. In addition, we list the historical details that we could retrieve about Theodor Anton Verkr?zen?s life, to offer the reader a broader context. 94 pp., 71 figs, 9 plates, br. 4.…

Add to basketThe first synthesis of New Zealand Mollusca was by F. W. Hutton (1873) in a publication entitled Catalogue of the New Zealand Mollusca. Following this work was contributed by papers by varios people, but it was not until 1913 that the magnificent work by H. Suter entitled The Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca was published, followed two years later by the relevant volume of plates. Many years were to follow before A. W. B. Powell produced and published his now famous New Zealand Mollusca (1979). This mammoth work brought together all of the known work on New Zealand Mollusca, by in this book Powell dedicated merely five pages to the family Volutidae. Other publications in which the Volutidae of New Zealand are featured, where by Weaver & duPont (1970) entitled the Living Volutes, and Poppe Goto s (1992) Volutes. Over the pass twenty?five years there has been a huge expansion in the activities of the benthic fisheries industry in New Zealand waters, as well as increased scientific work undertaken by the New Zealand Fisheries Research Development, NIWA. As a result, new fishing grounds have been discovered and these new areas have produced an amazing range of Volutidae, some previously known from only a few specimens and many new to science. Much confusion has occured with the identification of much of this new material, reslulting in misidentification and the overlooking of new discorveries. And so this work after many years of searching and research and many visits to the major museums of New Zealand and some of the nation s major shell collections, sets out for the first time a comprehensive monograph of the Volutidae of New Zealand. 73 pp., 28 maps, 82 figs, 62 col. pls, loose-leaf 4.…
