Starnberg, 4 dicembre 1932), è stato uno scrittore, traduttore, banchiere ed esoterista austriaco. Ha legato il suo nome all'opera esoterica Il Golem, che riprende una vecchia leggenda ebraica…di Praga. Biografia Figlio illegittimo di un ministro del Württemberg, il barone Karl von Varnbüler, e dell'attrice Maria Meyer. Contrariamente alle voci dell'epoca, Meyrink non era di origine ebraica. Si trattò di una voce generata dall'omonimia tra il nome di sua madre e quello di una donna ebrea.[senza fonte] Meyrink crebbe con la nonna materna ad Amburgo, frequentando poi il gymnasium a Monaco e la scuola commerciale a Praga, città nella quale iniziò a lavorare come impiegato in un'azienda di esportazione. In Il mio risveglio alla veggenza, breve brano autobiografico composto all'inizio degli anni venti, Meyrink racconta di aver avuto, fino al 1891, tre interessi nella vita: le donne, gli scacchi e il canottaggio. Colto da tedio esistenziale e da continue delusioni in campo amoroso, decise di porre fine alla sua esistenza, fino a quando, già con in pugno la sua arma, sotto la porta del suo studio venne fatto scivolare un opuscolo dal commesso di una libreria. « Presi il fascicolo e cominciai a sfogliarlo. Contenuto: spiritismo, occultismo, stregoneria. Questi argomenti, che fino ad allora avevo conosciuto solo per sentito parlare, a tal segno risvegliarono il mio interesse, che riposi la rivoltella nel cassetto. » Fu poi come titolare del Primo ufficio del cambio cristiano, piccola banca che aprì in Piazza San Venceslao nel 1889 e che poi chiuse nel 1902. Fallita e chiusa la piccola banca, Meyrink decise di cambiare completamente la sua attività e con essa la sua vita intraprendendo la carriera di scrittore. Dapprima iniziò a leggere un gran numero di libri sull'occultismo, preso da una ansia ardente di sapere. Desideroso di approfondire quanto appreso, iniziò a frequentare gli ambienti spiritici, ma rimase ben presto deluso dai personaggi cui veniva a contatto. Tali frequentazioni, però, fecero emergere una capacità visionaria nascosta nella sua personalità e che lo spinse in maniera decisiva verso la carriera di scrittore.Inizia così a usare lo pesudonimo con cui a tutt'oggi rimane noto (Meyrink): le sue prime storie sono una serie di racconti apparsi sulla rivista Simplicissimus di Monaco, raccolte successivamente in quattro volumi: Wachsifgurenkabinett, Orchidee, Der heisse Soldat, Jorn Uhl und Hilligenlei, poi riuniti, insieme ad altri lavori all'epoca inediti, nei tre tomi di Des deutschen Spiessers Wu"L'ospite misterioso", "Una storia di fantasmi", "Il violino di Cremona" di E.T.A. Hoffmann "La seduta spiritica", "Le stelle dell'Aldilà", "Chitrakarna" di Gustav Meyrink. Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, meglio noto come E. T. A. Hoffmann (Königsberg, 24 gennaio 1776 ? Berlino, 25 giugno 1822), è stato uno scrittore, compositore, pittore e giurista tedesco, esponente del Romanticismo. Conosciuto sotto il nome di Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann o di E. T. A. Hoffmann, inizia la sua carriera letteraria come critico musicale. Nei suoi racconti Hoffmann affronta diversi generi narrativi, spaziando dall'avventuroso al poliziesco ante litteram, dal fantastico al grottesco fino alla fiaba[1] si dedica a casi patologici e alla satira descrive la realtà concreta come un qualcosa di inconcepibile, assurdo, artificioso, mentre i sogni e le magie appaiono come aspetti assolutamente naturali e ovvi. La sua figura e le sue opere letterarie, improntate al fantastico e all'horror, influenzarono notevolmente il Romanticismo europeo ed ispirarono le narrazioni di molti autori, tra i quali Edgar Allan Poe e Fedor Dostoevskij[2]. Per gli scrittori francesi dell'Ottocento (Charles Baudelaire, Honoré de Balzac, Charles Nodier) Hoffmann ha incarnato il vero spirito romantico tedesco[3]. Dalla sua produzione letteraria trassero ispirazione anche Aleksandr Sergeevic Pu?kin, Nikolaj Vasil'evic Gogol' e Aleksandr Ivanovic Herzen[4], mentre per il giovane Hans Christian Andersen fu determinante l'incontro con le opere di Hoffmann e in particolare con Il bambino misterioso e Schiaccianoci e il re dei topi[5]. Del concetto hoffmanniano di umorismo tenne poi largamente conto Luigi Pirandello[6]. Esperto ed originale compositore, scambia nel 1805 il suo terzo nome, Wilhelm, con quello di Amadeus in onore a Mozart, suo modello, e diventa compositore[7]. È così l'autore di numerose opere (undici in tutto) e in particolare di Undine, tratta dal racconto omonimo del suo amico Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, ma anche di composizioni vocali e corali, musiche di scena, una sinfonia, una ouverture e varia musica da camera[8]. I suoi racconti e i suoi personaggi ispirarono inoltre le composizioni di altri musicisti, dai Kreisleriana di Robert Schumann[9] ai Racconti di Hoffmann di Jacques Offenbach, fino a La sposa sorteggiata di Ferruccio Busoni[10]. Alla fiaba Schiaccianoci e il re dei topi si rifece il musicista russo Pyotr Ilyic Ciajkovskij per la creazione (nel 1891) del suo celebre balletto Lo Schiaccianoci. Come avvocato è al servizio dell'amministrazione prussiana dal 1796 al 1804, poi dal 1814 fino alla morte. Come disegnatore e pittore la sua indipendenza e il suo gusto della satira gli causano più volte serie noie presso i suoi superiori, di cui non esita a fare una caricatura.
