Häufig werden Befürchtungen geäussert, der Ölpreis könnte sogar noch weitaus höher steigen. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert vor diesem Hintergrund die Det…erminanten der Preisentwicklung von Erdöl. Zunächst wird anhand des Hotelling-Modells ein theoretischer Rahmen für den Preispfad einer erschöpfbaren Ressource dargelegt. Anschliessend werden drei realwirtschaftliche Bestimmungsfaktoren des Erdölpreises - technologischer Fortschritt, die Entdeckung neuer Reserven sowie das Faktoreinkommen von Erdöl - untersucht, die als Erweiterung des Grundmodells von Hotelling dienen. In einer ökonometrischen Untersuchung des Erdölpreises von 1900 bis 2006 stellt sich heraus, dass diese Zeitreihe nur unter Einbezug von zwei Strukturbrüchen als trendstationär angesehen werden kann. Damit besitzen Schocks nur einen temporären Einfluss auf die Preisentwicklung, und die Zeitreihe kehrt immer wieder zu dem durch die realwirtschaftlichen Determinanten festgelegten Preistrend zurück. Dadurch können aussagekräftige Prognosen erstellt werden.
