8vo. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. xvi + 498 pp. + [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Half title. Author's name misspelt on title page as Juius. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt. Extremities worn, spine title rubbed. Some staining and foxing largely confined to edges. Library bookplate and stamps, including half title and title page. Illustrated by 2 plates, frontispiece and one folding and by numerous engravings and diagrams in text. A detailed study of the theory and practice of early telephone technology. 'It is difficult to realise the fact that ten years ago little or nothing was known of the telephone. In July, 1877, one of the authors of this book brought the first pair of practical telephones to Europe. There are now 200, 000 in daily use.' Sir William Henry Preece (1834-1913) spent the greater part of his career with the Post Office electric telegraph system and, according to the DNB, was initially reluctant to introduce the competing telephone, considering that a plentiful supply of messengers and errand boys was a sufficient alternative. He was later associated with pioneer work on wireless telegraphy. Julius Joseph Maier (1821-89) was a German writer on the practical applications of electricity. The title was first published in 1889 and COPAC has no records of this 1891 edition. A scarce title on early telephone technology.
