Prinzessin Rosenhold ist ein echtes Puppentheater, das uns an den Begegnungen der Prinzessin mit einem Brummkreisel, mit zwei Chinesen, dem Teufel aus dem Kasten sowie dem Nußknackerkönig teilhaben Läßt, bevor sie von Prinz Liliput mit einer von Schmetterlingen gezogenen Eichenlaub Kutsche aus dem Spielzeugland abgeholt wird. Es ist beinahe überflüssig zu sagen, daß alle Schmetterlinge mit den Flügeln schlagen, wenn der Ziehstreifen bewegt wird. Dieses letzte bewegliche Bilderbuch Meggendorfers ist aber noch an völlig anderer Hinsicht bemerkenswert. Obwohl der Einfluß Poccis noch deutlich spürbar ist, kündigt sich dennoch in den Bildern bereits jene Formenwelt des Trickfilms an, zu der dann viele Jahre später Walt Disney gefunden hat" (zit nach Puppentheatermuseum S. 23, Nr.121 und Krahé S. 165). - Meggendorfers überragende Bedeutung auf dem Gebiet der Spielbilderbücher ist nach wie vor unumstritten. Er ist als der witzigste und einfallsreichste Schöpfer von beweglichen Bilderbüchern und anderen Buchkuriositäten anzusehen. Seine Ziehbilderbücher sind dank einer raffiniert ausgedachten Mechanik wahre Meisterwerke einer sich auf Buchseiten abspielenden Pantomime" (H. Krahé in LKJ). - Rücken und Vorsätze fachgerecht erneuert, Deckel angestaubt und etwas fleckig, stellenweise im Blattrand und die Ziehstreifen fingerfleckig, noch sehr gutes Exemplar mit allen beweglichen Teilen und voll funktionsfähig. "Two of the most beautiful drawing picture books from Meggendorfer's late work, strongly influenced by Art Nouveau, are Prince Liliput and Princess Rosenhold, both of which have a coherent plot in addition to the mobility of the pictures. Princess Rosenhold is a real puppet theater that lets us participate in the princess's encounters with a humming top, two Chinese men, the devil from the box and the Nutcracker King before she is taken away from Toyland by Prince Lilliput in an oak-leaf carriage pulled by butterflies. Needless to say, all the butterflies flap their wings when the pull strip is moved. But this last moving picture book by Meggendorfer is remarkable in a completely different respect. Although Pocci's influence is still clearly perceptible, the pictures already herald the world of forms of animated film that Walt Disney found his way to many years later" (quoted from Puppentheatermuseum p. 23, no. 121 and Krahé p. 165). - Meggendorfer's outstanding importance in the field of picture books is still undisputed. He is regarded as the funniest and most imaginative creator of movable picture books and other book curiosities.
