Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Helen Lyman writes about the more humorous incidents she witnessed as the wife of an American diplomat, including incidents with the famous-Nelson Mandela, Al and Tipper Gore, Hillary Clinton-and the not so famous. Helen Lyman began writing in 2001 about the more humorous incidents she witnessed as the wife of an American diplomat. She saw the overseas life through the prism of someone who never thought of herself as being born to the trappings of diplomatic life. Her essays recount incidents from South Korea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Washington. They include incidents with the famous - Nelson Mandela, Al and Tipper Gore, Hillary Clinton -- and the not so famous whom she loved, like her first grade students in Nigeria. From housewife to family counselor, to teacher, to computer trainer for the State Department, she records the human touches of each of those and in the process her own development. Just as she was looking forward to a rich retirement life, illness struck. In those later years she wrote more about her early life, her family, the loss of a child, and her dreams for herself and for her country. The final work is thus not a traditional memoir. It is a rich journey. Near the end of her life, she turned to poetry and recorded her final thoughts in that way.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of English and Scottish ballads, exploring their origins, evolution, and enduring cultural significance. The author, drawing upon a vast collection of ballads, investigates the unique nature of these traditional narratives, which often lacked a fixed author and were instead passed down through generations by word of mouth. The book examines how the very act of oral transmission contributed to the ballad's changing form, with stanzas added, altered, or removed, and themes shifting over time. The author meticulously traces the influence of communal composition on ballads, exploring the process by which these songs were created within the context of specific societal gatherings, like hunts or celebrations. The text also considers the relationship between ballads and written literature, such as metrical romances, and explores the challenges of dating these narratives based on their textual transmission. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the profound impact that ballads have had on English and Scottish culture, revealing how these songs served as vehicles for transmitting history, folklore, and social commentary. Through a deep analysis of these rich and enduring narratives, the book offers a captivating glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of traditional storytelling. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
