La prise en compte du discours sur l?art dans l?Europe du Nord et l?examen de la production des artistes septentrionaux ont-ils modifie la conception de l?histoire de l?art jusque la fondee et etudiee a l?aune de la theorie italienne? Parallelement a l?apport de l?examen des ?uvres antiques, l?art septentrional joue-t-il un role particulier dans la reflexion sur l?art? Telles sont les questions qui se posent. Il n?est pas question de chercher a definir les caracteres de l?art septentrional, ni de s?attacher au regard que l?on peut maintenant porter sur les ?uvres, mais d?interroger le but des theoriciens et historiens du XVIIe siecle.
