Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $2.00 is still present on the front flap. DJ shows a lot of chipping and scuffing, particularly on the spine area and rear cover. Front jacket is torn several inches at the bottom right and creasing his present. Green cloth boards underneath the clean with only minor spotting, rear board has a bump at the bottom center edge. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues at boards though there is some pulling at spots, like page 126/127. Pages are toned due to age and there is a bit of spotting and foxing scattered about, though nothing serious. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [a good sound clean copy, minor wear to the extremities]. (color stage design drawings) This "simple and slightly uncouth saga" of backstage romance and shenanigans (which opens in Coney Island) is further described by its subtitle: "A love-sick Charade in three Acts and something like eight Scenes, recounting the Didoes of two young and amorous Souls, who nigh perished when they weren't in the Hay together." Produced by Billy Rose and staged by George Abbott, the play opened -- and closed -- at New York's Selwyn Theatre in early December 1932, chalking up a mere eleven performances. The tepid audience and critical response notwithstanding (Brooks Atkinson in the NYT found it "all rather stale and malodorous"), no sooner had the final curtain dropped than it was announced that Paramount had purchased the movie rights -- and although it took them a few years, they did finally produce a film version: SOME LIKE IT HOT (1939), starring Bob Hope. Illustrated by Herman Rosse (illustrator). …

Advance Review Copy with publisher's slip tipped onto the front fly. A play about carnival life; it was the basis for a 1934 Wesley Ruggles film *Shoot the Works*, with Ann Sheridan in a bit part, and then remade in 1939 as *Some Like it Hot*, an early Bob Hope vehicle memorable for showcasing drummer Gene Krupa (and not to be confused with the later Billy Wilder film).…

A smart, dust-wrapper-clad first edition of Hecht and Fowler's notoriously unsuccessful play, with colour illustrations by Herman Rosse. First edition. In the publisher's original black cloth binding, encased in the original, clipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with a vignette title page and several further colour decorations by Herman Rosse, who also designed the set for the 1932 performance. The unsuccessful Broadway play, co-written by Academy-Award winner Ben Hecht and American writer Gene Fowler. Following its debut at the New York Selwyn Theatre, the performance ran for a further ten shows before closing prematurely. From the theatrical collection of Clive Hirschhorn, theatre critic for the Sunday Express from 1966 to 1993. Known for his witty and thorough reviews, features and interviews, Hirschhorn also authored several works on the film industry, including his critically acclaimed biographies of Hollywood stars, Gene Kelly and James Mason. Dust wrapper also pleasing, featuring heavier edge wear, culminating in a few small chips, and light discolouration and marking. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean with only mild discolouration and the odd spot. Very Good. Herman Rosse (illustrator). book.…
