Juni 1989, waren in einer Ladengalerie im Zentrum der Hauptstadt der DDR die Versatzstücke einer deutschen Schulstube versammelt: Tierpräparate eines Adlers und eines Bussards, ein schwarzer Spiegel, ein…Pulttisch. Die Szene versinkt im Kohlenstaubnebel, den ein Staubsauger verwirbelte: Draußen die unerhört lautlose Implosion einer Landschaft. Mit deutscher Gründlichkeit. Die Erziehungsideale für den neuen sozialistischen Menschen in der DDR waren bekanntlich dieselben, die schon für den Untertan galten: Sauberkeit, Pünktlichkeit, Gewissenhaftigkeit, Genauigkeit, Fleiß, Gründlichkeit, Selbstbeherrschung, Disziplin und Ordnung. Nach der Öffnung der Mauer hofften die Verfassungspatrioten auf beiden Seiten auf einen toleranten, zivilen Umgang miteinander. Statt dessen vollzieht sich wider jede ökonomische Vernunft ein unerbittlicher Abwicklungsmechanismus mit westdeutscher Gründlichkeit. Die Penetranz, mit der nach der Vereinigung die Straßennamen und -Schilder, die Verkehrszeichen und Alltagsgegenstände der DDR demontiert und ausgetauscht worden sind, enthüllt die negative Verwandtschaft der beiden deutschen Staaten. Für die seit Mitte der 80er Jahre in Bologna, Paris und Rom arbeitende Bildhauerin Eleonore Straub und ihren Partner Günter Haring eine Erfahrung, die sie seit zwei Jahren auf die Spurensuche nach dem verlorenen Alltag von 40 Jahren DDR gebracht hat. Neugierig, beharrlich, lustvoll und zornig gehen sie auf Entdeckungsreise im Ostteil Berlins und in Potsdam, entdecken eine kurz vor der Wende neu eingerichtete Großbäckerei (VEB Backwarenkombinat Potsdam), die den Anschluß an den neuen Markt verfehlte und jetzt zum Freizeitpark umgerüstet werden soll, sammeln die aus dem Bestand der Stadtbezirksbibliothek Prenzlauer Berg entfernten Bücher, stellen die Stempel, Siegel und Bleisätze der ehemaligen Staatsdruckerei der DDR im Druckhaus Berlin-Mitte sicher, vergleichen die Spielkarten der beiden Berliner Spielkasinos und demonstrieren so den millimetergroßen Unterschied im Format, der für die Ostkarten das Aus bedeutete: Die Westnorm knapp verfehlt! Eleonore Straub und Günter Haring öffnen uns die Augen für die absurden Züge der Umwandlung von Alltagsgegenständen, an denen die Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen der Stadtbewohner hängen, in Makulatur. Indem sie diesen Abfall nicht ethnographisch inventarisieren, sondern ihn künstlerisch verwenden, lassen sie ihn wieder zu seinem Recht kommen. Ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger werden die immateriellen Werte der Zeichensysteme und Dinge des alltäglichen Gebrauchs sichtbar und spürbar. Eines der wenigen erheiternden Momente im Straßenbild der ehemaligen Hauptstadt der DDR waren die laufenden Männchen mit Hut an den Fußgängerübergängen. Rhythmisch blinkend führten sie die Besucher bereits im ehemaligen "Haus der sowjetischen Offiziere" in Potsdam die Treppen hinauf in den Festsaal zu den computergesteuerten Lichtinstallationen ihrer Ausstellung "Vorrang". Jetzt werden sie als verheißungsvolle Lichtspur eines für immer verlorenen, beengten, aber doch auf anrührende Weise auch überschaubareren Alltags neben den Leuchtbuchstaben OST das Dach der letzten Trutzburg östlicher Lebensweise, der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, schmücken. An important collection of nearly 200 artists' portraits, including Jose…ph Beuys, Fernando Botero, Arno Breker, Paul Flora, Ernst Fuchs, Karl Otto Götz, Keith Haring, Jörg Immendorff, Loriot, Heinz Mack, Georg Muche, Meret Oppenheim, Gerhard Richter, H. A. Schult, Roland Topor, Günther Uecker, Tomi Ungerer, Wolf Vostell, Dondi White, Shizuko Yoshikawa and many more. - Heinz-Günter Mebusch, a student of Otto Steinert, one of Germany's most important postwar photographers, was active in more than 40 countrys in Europe, Africa, and America. His longest and most extensive project was his series of ca. 200 artists' portraits, created between 1978 and 2000 in close collaboration with the sitters. A limited set of 25 copies was produced in the years 1979-1992, often with additional signatures (and an overpainting by Ford Beckman), titled "Reise zum Planeten ARS". Almost all of the present prints are signed by the sitters. They are numbered 22 (of a total run of 25) and are presented in an elaborate wooden casket; all are annotated by Mebusch on the reverse and bear his fingerprint. - Now an obscure name, Mebusch in his day was acquainted with all notable artists of his time, exhibiting in Costa Rica, Luxembourg, Vienna, Hollywood ("Polytoxicomania"), Düsseldorf ("Schatzsuche"), San Francisco (Goethe Institute, 1998), and Venice (Biennale, 1999), taught at the Folkwangschule in Essen, and organised or curated numerous art and photo projects, including the 1991 Beuys Festival in Düsseldorf. A small selection of his works was recently shown by the documenta archive, which owns its own copy of the portrait series: "Taken at very close range, the headshots captivate the viewer through the sitters' intense, direct gaze". - Rarely encountered complete in the original coffer: the only copy sold at auction within the last decades comprised merely 179 portraits.
