Paperback. Condition: New. Modal verbs in English communicate delicate shades of meaning, there being a large range of verbs both on the necessity side (must, have to, should, ought to, need, need to) and the possibility side (can, may, could, might, be able to). They therefore constitute excellent test ground to apply and compare different methodologies that can lay bare the factors that drive the speaker's choice of modal verb. This book is not merely concerned with a purely grammatical description of the use of modal verbs, but aims at advancing our understanding of lexical and grammatical units in general and of linguistic methodologies to explore these. It thus involves a genuine effort to compare, assess and combine a variety of approaches. It complements the leading descriptive qualitative work on modal verbs by testing a diverse range of quantitative methods, while not ignoring qualitative issues pertaining to the semantics-pragmatics interface. Starting from a critical assessment of what constitutes the meaning of modal verbs, different types of empirical studies (usage-based, data-driven and experimental), drawing considerably on the same data sets, shows how method triangulation can contribute to an enhanced understanding. Due attention is also given to individual variation as well as the degree to which modals can predict L2 proficiency level.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Serving as an introduction to English morphology and word-formation, this book also tries to advance the state-of-the-art in this field. The author takes his readers gently through the basic notions and discusses problematic areas. All chapters are approached systematically from three different angles focusing on structural, cognitive and sociopragmatic aspects of the field. In this way, new perspectives are opened particularly on the development and establishment of new complex words, on the cognitive functions of word-formation patterns and on the field of conversion.Students of English and linguistics will be able to use this book as an introduction and for preparing exams, term papers and final theses. The large number of examples is taken from a corpus of authentic language, which also serves as a basis for frequency counts of morphological features and elements in different text-types. This revised and enlarged third edition features a new chapter dealing with theoretical models of word-formation.'Schmid's approach is in many ways a fresh and original one. The systematic use of a corpus is a very welcome innovation, ensuring that the book is well grounded in up-to-date authentic materials.'Geoffrey Leech, Emeritus Professor of English Linguistics, Lancaster University.'Excellent! A reliable, comprehensive account with numerous 'real language' examples from corpora. Just what students need!'Jean Aitchison, Emeritus Rupert Murdoch Professor of Language and Communication, University of Oxford. 273 pp. Deutsch.…

Paperback. Condition: New. In recent years, linguists have increasingly turned to the cognitive sciences to broaden their investigation into the roots and development of language. With the advent of cognitive-linguistic, usage-based and complex-adaptive models of language, linguists today are utilizing approaches and insights from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, social psychology and other related fields. A key result of this interdisciplinary approach is the concept of entrenchment-the ongoing reorganization and adaptation of communicative knowledge. Entrenchment posits that our linguistic knowledge is continuously refreshed and reorganized under the influence of social interactions. It is part of a larger, ongoing process of lifelong cognitive reorganization whose course and quality is conditioned by exposure to and use of language, and by the application of cognitive abilities and processes to language. This volume enlists more than two dozen experts in the fields of linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurology, and cognitive psychology in providing a realistic picture of the psychological and linguistic foundations of language. Contributors examine the psychological foundations of linguistic entrenchment processes, and the role of entrenchment in first-language acquisition, second language learning, and language attrition. Critical views of entrenchment and some of its premises and implications are discussed from the perspective of dynamic complexity theory and radical embodied cognitive science.…
