Trading out of the port of Poole in their small sailing ships, they established a successful commerce with the European ports, The North American colonies and, more importantly and lastingly in the fisheries of Newfoundland. This trading lasted from Elizabethan times up until the middle of the nineteenth century. Poole?s share of this trade varied from decade to decade but, in the more prosperous period starting in the late 1700?s and lasting until about 1830, Poole had the lion?s share of the Newfoundland trade of the ?Western Adventurers? This volume covers the family history, the commercial interests, the newly built halls and mansions and the various epitaphs remaining to champion these old traders and entrepreneurs.* An ACCEPTABLE damp stained copy of the 1st. edition, suitable for reference, with tatty but essentially complete jacket.* 1976-12-01.

Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. This copy is in fine condition bound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board. The price clipped dust wrapper has some edge wear and one or two closed tears so best described as good. This copy is from the library… of the late Sir Owen Aisher (1900-1993) who was the Chairman of Marley Ltd (1945-1982) and bears an inscription to him on the front paste down. He inherited from his father the ability to read widely, urged on with such aphorisms as 'to read much is to learn much', 'to learn much is to know much' and 'knowledge is power'. This book vividly recreates the history od the great merchants of commerce and their housesand heritage in Dorset. Ref LL1.

Cover Title: THE LONG-SUPPRESSED EROTIC TALES OF SACHER-MASOCH THE MAN WHO BEQUEATHED HIS NAME TO MASOCHISM VENUS IN FURS • THE BLACK CZARINA THE FAMOUS CLASSICS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEX AND CRUELTY, NOW OPENLY PUBLISHED IN THE U.S. IN COMPLETE FORM. I…LLUSTRATED 188 p.; ill.; 18 cm. Vintage pulp fiction with orange-red edges, exhibits mild wear to covers, including rubbing and creasing, sticker residue, but is otherwise Very Good+ being obviously unread. Illustrated with black and white drawings. From the back: Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was an Austro-Hungarian who put a new word into the English language: masochism, or submission with the enjoyment of pain. Venus in Furs is regarded as his finest literary work, one that becomes compellingly alive because the author has lived the part of Sevarin, the man who fell fatally in love with Wanda von Dunajew and implored her to make him her slave. The story of how he first aroused her dangerous passion for domination, how he submitted to brutal beatings and was finally cast aside after she had taken another lover forms a tale as extraordinary as any to be found in literature. Sacher-Masoch's long suppressed story of the unhappy dilettante who degraded himself and was physically abused by his mistress may shock some, but remains a bold and unvarnished exposition of the relationship between pleasure and pain that has been hailed as an underground masterpiece. Dianne Hillier (illustrator).
