Tra colpi, contraccolpi e bizzarrie della Storia, l'autore attraversa più di mezzo secolo: dall'infanzia trascorsa in una Mosca ancora segnata dalla Seconda guerra mondiale fino alla partenza per gli Stati Uniti, passando per i viaggi giovanili nelle esotiche repubbliche meridionali dell'allora Unione Sovietica e le traversie (spesso tragicomiche) con le autorità impegnate a bloccargli le opere "irregolari". Scanditi con ritmo e respiro quasi poematico, scevri di qualsivoglia romanticismo e, anzi, garbatamente ironici, i pezzi intimi di questo catalogo di accadimenti suggestivamente "imperfetti" mostrano come si possa essere autobiografici con tutta la grazia di chi "semplicemente" racconta senza esibirsi, balzando in primo piano ma, al contempo, rimanendo deliziosamente sottotraccia.
