Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A nice copy of this scarce Russian children's book. First Edition, later reprinted by the Soviets in 1928 with different illustrations. 10 1/4 x 12 3/8 in. 158, [1] pp. Text in Russian. Poems by Sasha Chernyi. Mounted color cover Lithograph, and b/w lithograph title page and 19 additional full-page lithographs by Boris Dmitrievich Grigoriev. Original quarter red cloth over paper covered boards. // A collection of poems for children by the exiled Russian-Jewish poet, satirist, and children's author Alexander Mikhailovich Glikberg (Alieksandr Mikhailovich Glikbiergh; 1880-1932), known by the pen name Sasha Chorny. The book, which describes an imaginary world full of adventures, games, and colorful characters. // Children's Island was released at the end of 1920. The poet's widow wrote in her memoirs: "I met by chance one of my students at the Higher Women's Courses in St. Petersburg, who was married to the lawyer B. I. Elkin, who now held a prominent position in the large Ulstein publishing house in Berlin ('Ulstein and Co' - a newspaper and book publisher in Berlin, which published 'Slovo' and several other emigrant publications. He immediately arranged for the publication of a collection of Sasha's children's poems 'Children's Island', which was illustrated by our close acquaintance from St. Petersburg, the artist Boris Grigoriev. Despite its rather high price, this book sold out rather quickly in two editions. (Glikberg M. I. From memoirs // Russian literary magazine. ?., 1993. Vol. 2. ? 242) // Condition: cover has been nicely colored by a previous owner accenting the titles in yellow, with additional coloring to the lithograph in yellow and green; wear to the spine, and some fraying to the spine ends, corners rubbed and bumped, else Very Good.
Famous Russian children book --- Very good example of this celebrated children book, Chernyi's first publication in emigration after the poet left Russia in the autumn 1920. This collection of verse about toys, games and zoo animals includes works from the 1910s but also inedited poems which Chernyi wrote in Vilnius. Like Vladimir Nabokov, Sasha Chernyi (also Chorny; 1880-1932) left for Berlin first, but eventually settled in Paris, where he died of a heart attack while helping his neighbours put out a fire. The book has been praised for Grigoriev's numerous illustrations, his only work for children. One of the celebrated Russian émigré artists, Boris Grigoriev (1886-1939) was a prominent painter and draughtsman, particularly famous for his distinctive imagery in cabaret and genre scenes, and mysticism. He was expelled from the St Petersburg Academy of Arts for his association with Cubism and Post-Impressionism, as well as for the influence of futurists on his art. In 1919 he secretly left Russia, crossing the Gulf of Finland with his family in a boat. In exile he earned wide recognition: he was elected a member of the Paris Salon d'Automne, had personal exhibitions in major European and American cities, and even headed the Academy of Arts in Santiago, Chile. This fine publication is fragile and often found in poor condition. Provenance: Unidentified bookplate to upper pastedown with a globe, skull and books on a table, with "75" in purple ink instead of the owner's name (possibly a "Ella Schult" as found in pencil on another example of this bookplate). Physical description:Quarto (31 x 25 cm). 159 pp. with lithographed title, 19 full-page lithographs and illustrations in text, all by Grigoriev. Original publisher's cloth-backed boards with colour lithograph illustration mounted to upper board and designed by B. D. Grigoriev, spine lettered in gilt, top edge dyed yellow. Condition:A bit rubbed and scuffed at extremities, boards lightly soiled or stained, lower board slightly sunned along spine; pencil inscription in Cyrillic of Chernyi's original name "(Glikberg)" next to the author's name on title, otherwise nicely fresh inside. The illustrations include designs for "Boris Godounov," "Lower Depths," "Brothers Karamazov," "Cherry Orchard," from the company's repertory, as well as Grigoriev's monumental "Faces of Russia" cycle.
First edition, limited edition of 500 copies, this copy hors serie; 4to, illustrated with 30 plates by Grigoriev with tissue guards; publisher's special binding for the owner of half vellum over boards, title gilt stamped to upper cover as well as 'The Moscow Art Theatre.Special Edition by Order of Morris Gest'. Grigoriev's wonderful work here printed specially for one of Broadway's most successful producers of the 1910s and 1920s. Numerous illustrations and tipped in reproductions of the artist's work are accompanied with essays by Louis Reau, Clare Sheridan, Andrà Levinson, Claude Farrere and Andrà Antoine. Although Grigoriev left Russia in 1918, the faces of Russian peasants continued to haunt him, and he worked tirelessly on this theme while living in France in the early 1920s. The result is an intense study of the faces of the Russian people; each portrait depicts the peasant in a uniquely harsh light, exposing the hardships of their lives through their rugged faces and expressive eyes. Every subject is charged with universal human traits and reveals a moving impression of weariness at odds with unrelenting resilience. Through the artist's characteristically vivid palette and bold, Cubist-inspired brushstrokes, the viewer is drawn into the subject's world and inner spirit. Jewish-American theatrical producer Morris Gest was born Mishka Gershonovitch in 1875 in Koshedary, a small village near Vilnius, Lithuania, and raised in the Jewish community of Butrimonys. When he was twelve years old his parents envisaged a better future for their son and so gave him to a married couple who were emigrating to America. They had hoped he would live with his cousins who had already settled in Boston (amongst whom was Bernard Berenson) but he chose to live on his own, finding an income in selling what he could on the streets. He found himself working in the Yiddish theatres of the city and his success in advertising shows led him to New York where he was spotted by Oscar Hammerstein I and F. Ray Comstock. With the help of his new found partners, Gest's career flourished and he made a name for himself by bringing Nikita Baileff's 'La Chauve Souris' and Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theatre to the States. As his wealth and status increased he was even able to use his connections to negotiate safe passage of his parents out of the Soviet Union and into Germany.
