Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth analysis of the physical properties of wire rope, a fundamental component in engineering and construction. The author delves into various types of wire rope, including tiller, guy, hoisting, and flexible constructions, exploring their tensile strengths, elongations, and reductions in diameter. The book also examines the laws of construction and formulas for estimating purposes, providing valuable insights into the mechanics of wire rope. The author draws upon a vast dataset of tensile tests conducted on over 300 wire rope specimens, analyzing the observed data to uncover the fundamental relationships between the rope's construction, material properties, and performance. These findings shed light on the behavior of wire rope under various loading conditions, contributing to a deeper understanding of its structural integrity. Overall, this book is a comprehensive resource for engineers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to enhance their knowledge of wire rope properties and applications. It offers practical formulas and empirical equations that can be applied in the design and analysis of wire rope systems, ensuring optimal performance and safety in critical engineering applications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of an experimental investigation into the behavior of 18 large bridge columns conducted by the Bureau of Standards at Pittsburgh in the early 20th century. Prior to this study, most bridge column data was primarily based on preliminary calculations, but the author sought to supplement this information with mechanical determinations of maximum stresses in the columns and their details. The book is divided into five parts: description of apparatus, purpose and scope of the investigation, discussion of results, conclusions, and original data of the investigation. The large number of tests included in this book provides data and insights valuable to engineers and designers alike, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the behavior of bridge columns under axial loads. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Publication: London, The Cresset Press, 1941 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [xi], 301. Condition Report: Good. This wartime volume presents in its publisher's original beige cloth binding, lacking the dust wrapper. The boards exhibit moderate overall wear, characterised by discernible grubbiness and several notable foxing or moisture stains, most prominently affecting the lower rear board. The red stamped lettering and horizontal banding to the spine remain entirely legible, though they show mild fading. The spine itself is slightly sunned, while the extremities, particularly the spine tips and corners, are gently bumped and rubbed from shelf use. Internally, the text block remains sound and securely bound, with the page edges showing expected age-related tanning. Overall, it is a structurally solid but cosmetically worn example of a fragile wartime production. Catalogue Note: This is a first edition of H.G.âs (Hubert Griffithâs) firsthand account of the Royal Air Force, published by The Cresset Press in 1941. Printed during the height of the Second World War by the Shenval Press, the book adheres to standard wartime economy production, which accounts for the typical toning of the paper stock. Unillustrated and securely bound in its primary binding, this copy remains free from any notable provenance, bookplates, or major internal markings. While copies of this work do occasionally surface on the open market, they are relatively scarce today, particularly as early wartime editions are often lost to time or heavy handling. Penned under the pseudonym H.G. (Hubert Griffith), R.A.F. Occasions offers an intimate and authentic glimpse into the operations, philosophy, and daily realities of the Royal Air Force during the early, tumultuous years of the Second World War. Moving seamlessly from the peace-time years into the heart of the conflict, Griffith provides vivid accounts of Coastal Command, the Retreat from Cambrai, and the intensive training of new recruits and bomber boys. It is a compelling record of personal contacts and wartime impressions, capturing the resilience and spirit of British airmen defending the skies. N/A (illustrator). …
