Index of streets & area description on the back of the map.* Product Description :- Detailed map of Doncaster (N); Yorkshire sheet 277.13. Introduction by Clive Howarth. The importance of communications to the history of Doncaster is clearly shown in this map of the North East of the town. The Great North Road named variously High Street, French Gate and Marsh Gate, as it intersects with the Great Northern Railway, The Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation and the River Don, illustrates the various modes of transport which have influenced the development of the town. With a population of 29,000 at the 1901 census, housing developments were becoming increasingly distanced from the town centre. This encouraged the development of the Tramway system which, although not marked on the map along the entirety of its routes, is shown running through Beckett Road in the Wheatley area and along Bently Road in the North East.* A very good copy with minimal faults.* 1984-01-01.

Condition: New. 2010 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1897). SB. 236ppPublished Price £11.50 A scion of a distinguished British military family, General Sir Hugh Gough VC recounts in this vivid volume of his military memoirs the beginning of the Indian Mutiny at Meerut and his subsequent experiences. Gough, a Cornet in the 3rd Light Cavalry of the East India Company's army, describes garrison life at Meerut before the mutiny; the gathering discontent of the native Sepoys and the savage outbreak of the mutiny itself. He describes the confusion and uncertainty as British officers tried to decide which of their soldiers would remain loyal and which would mutiny. Gough took part in the Siege of Delhi, including the assault on the city; the march on Agra; the capture of Cawnpore and the relief of Lucknow. This is a valuable first hand account by a fighting soldier.
