The Great North Road named variously High Street, French Gate and Marsh Gate, as it intersects with the Great Northern Railway, The Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation and the River Don, illustrates the various modes of transport which have influenced the development of the town. With a population of 29,000 at the 1901 census, housing developments were becoming increasingly distanced from the town centre.
