The German propaganda machine coined the term "Rats" to describe the Australians and others who would not come out of their holes to surrender to Rommel's forces. In doing so their infamous broadcaster, William Joyce, ensured the "Rats of Tobruk" earned a place in history. Night after night he could be heard on the radio calling on the Rats as 'self-supporting prisoners of war' to show the white flag. His English accent and his sneering tone earned him the contemptuous epithet of Lord Haw Haw. William Joyce of Irish descent was born in America. He left Sir Oswald Mosley's British Unit of Fascists to join Arnold Leese's Imperial League of Fascists and helped to found the National Socialist Party of Britain. At the outbreak of war he fled to Germany to give propaganda broadcasts. Found guilty of treason after the war, William Joyce was hanged on 3 January 1946. Weight: 395g.

SIGNED and inscribed to Stubbs (Appointed as a captain, Australian Army Medical Corps, Australian Imperial Force, on 1 November 1940, Victor Stubbs-Brown served in the Middle East in 1941-42 with a number of units, including the 2/4th Australian General Hospital at Tobruk, Libya, during the siege. In 1943-44 he was with the 106th Casualty Clearing Station in New Guinea. A shortage of specialists at Brisbane Hospital resulted in his early demobilisation and he transferred to the Reserve of Officers as a major on 16 February 1944) with a loosely inserted 2 page letter from the author to Stubbs-Brown's widow on his passing. The letter mentions war service, the launch of the book and the sympathies of the 2/4 AGH Association. Excellent unit history of medical unit serving at Tobruk. Size: 8vo. The Nursing Profession as a whole - and the Royal Australian Nursing Corps in particular - owe a great debt of gratitude to Dr Rupert Goodman for this book -- "Our War Nurses". It is truly a monumental achievement, tracing as it does, the beginnings from 1902 - a few volunteers (26) - with little or no equipment and very basic Medicine - to the present day of Medical marvels, Nursing Degree training and relatively substantial renumeration. The amount of research so evidently involved in the compilation of this history study is quite staggering.
